Skymates: Love, Sex and Evolutionary Astrology, by Jodie Forrest, Steven Forrest

No "doomed relationship" clutter the pages of SKYMATES. In this completely new, positive, and radically expanded edition of their classic book on the astrology of relationships, Steven and Jodie Forrest emphasize freedom of choice, honest communication, and mutual psychological understanding as the keys to satifying, lasting intimacy. Jodie's Nordic-Celtic historical fantasy "Rhymer" trilogy, beginning with THE RHYMER AND THE RAVENS, has drawn a large audience. THE NATIONAL FANTASY FAN says of her work, "Fantasy that fires the blood; truly high fantasy at its best!" Sting calls Steven's work "as intelligent and cogent as it is poetic." Drawing on their twenty years of life together as well as countless hours with clients, the Forrests weave a coherent blend of astrology, modern psychology and reincarnation. Beginners as well as professional astrologers will particularly love the extensive and detailed "cookbook" sketches of specific configurations. Saturn in your House of Marriage? Your Sun squares your partner's Venus? Just look it up. The first edition of SKYMATES became a cult classic; this new one goes light years further.

About the Author
In addition to SKYMATES, Jodie Forrest wrote the Nordic-Celtic historical fantasy trilogy, The Rhymer and the Ravens: The Book of Fate; The Elves’ Prophecy: The Book of Being; and The Bridge: The Book of Necessity. Loosely inspired by the legend of Thomas the Rhymer, Forrest’s trilogy unfolds in Elfland, Asgard, and Viking Age Europe. Her Norse bard, Tomas, is kidnapped by the Queen of Elfland and returns to our world with growing psychic powers, a total inability to lie, and a Mission. Historical detail is as accurate as possible, and serves as a scaffolding for the fantastic elements.

Jodie’s M.A. in French and Spanish didn’t prevent her from becoming an astrologer, nor from playing keyboard and bass in a rock and roll band. Her band, Dragonship, has performed and recorded her husband Steven’s rock opera based on The Rhymer and the Ravens. With some new personnel, Dragonship is at work on a second show for The Elves’ Prophecy. Meanwhile, Jodie is at work on a whodunit, fantasy short stories, and a book using the Norse pantheon to analyze the astrological planets.

With Steven, Jodie co-wrote two computerized report writers on the astrology of relationships. Her other publications include dozens of astrological articles, newspaper and magazine articles, and poetry, She’s taught fiction writing, and French and Spanish at the college level. She lives with her husband Steven, a profoundly spoiled black cat named Pyanfar, and an uppity cast of her fictional characters.

Steven received a B.A. in Religion in 1971 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and shortly thereafter established his astrological practice. In 1984, Bantam Books published his first book, The Inner Sky. Esquire magazine called it "intelligent, well-written and actually fun." That volume was followed in 1986 by The Changing Sky. In 1988, with his wife, Jodie Forrest, he released the original edition of the popular Sky trilogy, Skymates. Steven's fourth book was published by ACS in May 1993. Titled The Night Speaks, it is an argument for astrology’s intellectual and philosophical plausibility. His fifth work, The Book of Pluto, was released in May 1995 by ACS. His books with Jeffrey Wolf Green, Measuring the Night: Evolutionary Astrology and the Keys to the Soul, are based on a series of lectures the authors did together and were co-published by Seven Paws Press and Daemon Press. Additionally, Steven has written for most of the major American astrological journals and several national magazines outside the astrological field. He composed texts for two popular computerized astrological report writers: "The Sky Within" and "SkyLog." Steven has written the monthly astrology column for ELLE and SASSY magazines, and appeared on the national cable TV show, "Alive and Wellness," as well as many radio programs around the country. His work has been translated into several languages, and he travels widely lecturing on astrological topics. Steven is currently Chair of the Kepler College Advisory Council, which is an accredited astrologically-oriented university in Seattle, WA.

SKYMATES: Love, Sex, and Evolutionary Astrology, Volume One

Preface to the New Edition This new edition of Skymates is based on the previous edition in about the same way a Boeing 777 is based on the contraption the Wright brothers flew. Even if you have a dog-eared copy of the older book, we encourage you to open this one at random and take a look. You'll see the differences right away.

Our previous Skymates came out toward the end of the last century, in 1989, as a Bantam Books original, and the identical text was reprinted in 1992 under a new cover by ACS Publications.

Saying “toward the end of the last century” may seem precious here in the summer of 2001, but it feels right. When we wrote that book, we had been married only four or five years—whistling past the graveyard, we joked a lot about tempting the Fates by writing a book about marriage so early in our own journey together. Now we're twenty years down the road, still loving each other one day at a time. We've learned a thing or two, and we've incorporated all of that into these pages. That's one big difference.

Another difference is that we're both in bed with our publishers nowadays. Seven Paws Press is our own business. That gives us a lot of freedom to write in our own voices, independent of the pervasive pressure on astrological writers to dumb everything down. We're still stinging from a conversation with an editor who insisted that “enhanced” was too hard a word for the astrological audience. We know that you, our readers, are smarter than that. On the other hand, perhaps we should be thankful to that editor—Seven Paws Press owes a lot of its direction and intent to that exchange.

There are also many concrete differences between this new book and the previous one. The most obvious distinction is that we've added extensive “cookbook” sections. Learning to think astrologically is really the higher ground, but many readers have expressed appreciation for simply being able to look things up. If your natal Sun squares your partner's Venus, turn to Chapter Thirteen. If you are wondering about the sexual significance of Saturn being in your eighth house, try Chapter Eleven.

We've come to particularly “enhanced” understandings of the intimate meanings of two of astrology's core symbols: the fourth and sixth houses. We've added those perspectives to our previous “arc of intimacy” material—and supplemented that entire section of the book with detailed analyses of what it means to have each particular planet in houses four, five, six, seven or eight. Name the configuration: it's there.

Back in our Bantam Books days, we were discouraged from making our writing “too spiritual.” That led to a diminished focus on the evolution of consciousness, and specifically on the psychological dynamics of reincarnation. We've filled that vacuum here—although if you are uncomfortable with the idea of reincarnation, we think you will still find the book mostly accessible. Some of our assumptions are unabashedly metaphysical, but we try to speak the verifiable language of experience, and also of psychology. You can, in all cases, try on what we say and see if it works for you.

Finally, to make room for the extra content, something had to go. We decided to excise all the material about the composite chart which made up Part Four, “The Eternal Triangle,” of the original Skymates. That was a hard choice, but it was made even more pressing by the fact that we have learned enough about the composite chart over the last fourteen years to fill another book.

Writing that one is our next project. We hope to have Skymates, Volume Two: The Composite Chart, available sometime in 2003.

Finally, the synastry Bible!
By Diana Griffin
I've always loved my copy of the Forrests' earlier version of Skymates, which has become kind of a collectors item since it went out of print years ago. I kept having to get it back from friends I'd loaned it to. I ordered the new one, not sure if it could be very different. But it's a major re-write with lots of new material. The best part for me are the huge "cookbook" sections where you can just look up what it means if your Venus conjuncts somebody else's Saturn and so forth. Their writing style is mostly simple and easy to understand, but their interpretations are the deepest and the most "real" I've ever seen anywhere. There's a long section about F Scott Fitgerald and Zelda Fitzgerald that actually made me cry, it was so beautiful. That part also shows how to put all the details and techniques the authors describe into a kind of "big picture," so you're left with more than a head full of unconnected ideas. They've got some past-life stuff in the book too - the soul-reasons behind certain issues a person might have in relationships. Everybody will have to make up their own mind about that, but it all rang really true for me. This is the synastry book I've been waiting for. I recommend it totally.

Romeo and Juliet Star-Crossed No More!
By A Customer
If Shakespeare's lovers had had this book, things might not have ended so badly...
"Skymates" doesn't tell you that if you're a Cancer, you should never marry a Scorpio. The Forrests respect our freedom to choose our mates; they use astrology -- with humor, intelligence, and compassion -- to help us make the best of the relationships we have.
Early in the book, Chapter Two offers a quick overview of the building blocks of astrolgy: signs, planets and houses -- this way, one doesn't have to be a certified professional astrologer to use "Skymates."
The Forrests then cover in-depth the houses that make up the Arc of Intimacy and detail the significance of having planets in those houses.
After that, they move into the synastry portion of the book, touching briefly but not boringly on the mathematics of calculating aspects, then what the various major aspects mean: conjunctions, oppositions, trines and squares. Configurations are covered in a sizeable "cookbook" section where couples can look up their charts: Your Mars is square your partner's Mars -- what does that mean? Look it up and find out!
They put it all together using famous artistic pairings: Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who, and Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald.
Anyone interested in improving his or her own relationships should pick up a copy of this book.

The best astrology of relating book I've ever read!
By A Customer
This astonishing book is a whole lot more than just a reprint of the Forrests' earlier classic. They discuss the astrology of relationships in so much depth and with such detail, and with such positive, affirming attitudes, that I know I'll refer to this book over and over again. The "cookbook" stuff alone is worth the cover price--what it means if your Venus squares your mate's Sun and all that--but most of all it's the spirit behind this work that is so precious, that committed love can truly work in this day and age, and that it can be improved.
