Magnus Resch's takedown of the art industry is shocking... and it's meant to be. His goal is nothing other than the complete revitalization of the art business. In clear, simple charts, Magnus shows that galleries spend 2/3 of their efforts marketing to people who don't buy art. Unsurprisingly, then, most galleries fail to make a profit and many lose money. To make matters worse, all but a few artists also fail to monetize their careers and eventually give up and change jobs! If you're an artist or gallerist, the facts here will hit you like a piano falling out of a window. What you do with this information is up to you. Magnus's hope, and mine, is that many new business models spring to life in order to allow galleries to capture the kind of markets that Apple, Uber, and Amazon have captured. Several different business models will be required. New art *brands* must be established with their own raison d'etre. Let this fascinating book open your eyes and inspire you to a future where all of us in the arts make more money. Highly recommended.

commonsense and hype is how you do it

This colorful handbook looks like a fancy college term paper, and is very slick in presenting itself as a supposedly useful tool for galleries.
Yet after wading through the highlighted and multi sized colorful print what it actually advises could be summed up over a cup of coffee, well before it went cold.
I felt tricked in paying a high price for this book. The usefulness and advice is very thin in substance, and very long in presentation.
Like many galleries are.
I prefer my bologna in a sandwich, not as a book.

Starry starry night--why did the child take flight?

To begin, I loved this book and found it hard to put aside, as the story of a lost child can certainly pull at your heartstrings. But as I started to read, I felt I was reading a book written by author Jennifer McMahon, as Ms. McMahon bases her stories in Vermont and Ms. Greenwood did likewise with this book. Also, both authors give their characters off-the-wall first names, such as Effie, Plum, Zu-Zu, Winnie, Reggie, Tess, Piper. Every time I saw Plum's and Zu-Zu's names in the book I cringed and felt sorry for these two girls having to go through life with those names! Why, oh, why, do authors have to delve into the unusual to name a child! But, those issues aside, I loved the storyline of a woman on a dirt road seeing a half-nude female child standing alone and forlorn in the middle of the road. As with today's society, wine is always brought into the storyline, as with Tess being half-drunk when she saw the child. In the blink of an eye the child disappears and our story begins. I feel that if you want to commit a crime, go to Quimby, Vermont, as the police were spaced out and never saw the "bad guys" right in front of them, relating to organized pit bull dog fights, with dogs kept in pens in the woods, drugs runners and dealers going back and forth from Vermont to Massachusetts, junkies in their home town and, worse of all, a half-baked girl named Lisa running a run-down daycare center with an aggressive pit bull in the building. How did this daycare ever pass inspection in the State of Vermont? In the midst of all this, Tess is trying to convince the authorities that she did see a child at 12 midnight and she is determined to investigate on her own and find the little girl. There is a subplot of Tess trying in the past to adopt a child from Guatemala and her broken-down marriage with Jake. There is anxiety, darkness and hope in this book and I applaud the ending where HOPE shines through.

One of the best books I have read this year. The characters are so well written you feel like they are your friends. The book keeps you guessing through the whole thing. Did Tess really see a little girl or was she just imagining it! What a great read!

He has preferred a balance between the latest ideas, classic themes and practical middlegame play. Naturally the key theoretical aspects are highlighted, but he also looks at important moments whenever they occur. Sound repertoire, but you'll need to do more work.

Sveshnikov's approach to opening books - for example in his works on the 2 c3 Sicilian and Advance French - is idiosyncratic, relying on the analysis of a large number of games rather than concrete opening variations. In this way the reader learns to understand the openings, and consequently those volumes will stand the test of time. He adopts a similar approach here but doesn't achieve quite the same the same effect. This is possibly because there are a large number of anti-Sicilians, each with their own positional themes. Perhaps it is also because the author's great analytical contribution is to the above to openings plus of course the Sicilian Sveshnikov, and he has less to say about the anti-Sicilians.

Nonetheless, the repertoire presented is reliable and "main-line", with the exception of the 2.c3 Sicilian where he recommends a sub-line as an alternative to the main lines presented in his 2 c3 book. He doesn't cover the Rossolimo/Moscow complex, which is one of the two key anti-Sicilians (but then neither did Richard Palliser in "Fighting the anti-Sicilians").

I suspect you will need to do quite a bit of extra work with the help of databases and engines, and I am sure Evgeny would say "that's what you should be doing!"

The book is good, it offers simple and effective lines and it is well analyzed, I did not find any serious tactical mistake. The problem is the Rossolimo variation, which is not covered in this book, it will be analyzed later according to Sveshnikov.

A concise, but now outdated price guide

Published by the reknowned Manions' Auction Company, this small book is a concise price guide to german militeria. Included in the price guide is almost everything: books, helmets, medals, badges, uniforms, photos, identification books, posters etc.. Heavily illustrated with small photographs and concisely described, the items number in the thousands. Sadly, however, the prices listed are now almost seven years out of date. It is now rare for example, to find an original Second World War, Iron Cross First Class for only $85.00. A good supplemental reference work and a useful "floor" price reference, this book provides a good representation of items usually offered for sale on the open market. This book however,is by no means comprehensive. It should never be used to completely authenticate an item.

Can't Complain

Stashed this away for reference on projects if anything is forgotten or disputed. No longer need internet if its not available. The quality is good, but the amount of information is overwhelming. If you are going to actually be studying for a class, I recommend making your own study card in addition to buying this as there are many benefits to doing so.

Excellent and Useful

This book is an excellent collection of articles related to real world economic topics. It covers topics such as rent control, drug prices, and predatory lending in black communities. I am using it as a suppliment to a microecnomics class I am teaching so as to bring the theory we cover to real world issues.
