Page-Turning Adventure!

If you are an experienced traveler or someone who likes to read about others’ adventures in travel, I have a book to recommend to you. Neville William’s book, TransAfrica62 is his story of the trip he and a friend took when they traveled by motorcycle from Egypt to Capetown, South Africa in 1962. Neville, a long time friend, is a talented writer who makes the pages of the book come alive through his gift of narrative. It is an adventure story, but it is also a coming of age story because of how the people he met and the places he saw changed him.
Neville has the knowledge to reach back into history to provide insights into the people and culture he was visiting and then updates the narrative with today’s reality. I learned so much about the people and places he visited through his engaging storytelling. Each chapter has a jewel, an insight, a bit of fascinating trivia or some fact relevant to understanding Africa today.
Neville follows the path of the famous adventurer, Sir Richard Halliburton and like Halliburton, spent a night sleeping on top of the great Pyramid in Egypt. In vivid detail he recounts the perils of his climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Mountains of the Moon in East Africa. He faced the challenge of navigating Africa’s roads on a motorcycle in 1962, and whether it was luck or skill he had only one accident!
Neville’s adventures as a young man are retold now with descriptions of the relationships he developed (and romanticized) with the captivating young women he met along the way. These vignettes bring a very human aspect to the adventure story. It was fun to remember the 1960s through his eyes.
I was one of the people who gave Neville travel advice from my experience hitchhiking from Alexandria, Egypt to Mombasa in 1961. Our adventures had many similarities and we both wonder today how we did it, but we don’t question why we did it.
Read it; he tells a fascinating story about the adventure that changed his life.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. The reading was fast and fun. As I turned each page I was looking forward to the next adventure. Even in '62 an adventurer could get in trouble in dark Africa, but Neville Williams and Rich Lytle seem either innocent or fearless. When Neville and Rich parted ways, Neville went on alone. Scary, but I am sure he is now glad he continued the trip. I learned a lot about the geography of Africa as I followed them from Cairo to Cape Town. I especially appreciated the acceptance of the locals when they asked to camp here there and everywhere. They were smart to camp at police headquarters when possible. Every step of the way I wondered how it would be to travel this same route today. I don't think it would be a good idea. Sadly the world has changed in much of Africa. I found myself wishing I had done something so adventurous when I was young and able.

Journey of a long-lost era through darkest Africa.

Neville is my cousin so I know the African trip very well. But the book includes many stories that he had not repeated to the family previously. I am glad to see that he has documented the trip for the public to read. Well written and entertaining story for all armchair adventurers to explore the Africa of times long past. It helped me a lot to have a map of Africa handy to plot Neville's journey as I read.

Good introduction into SUSE admin

This is a fairly comprehensive guide to learning the basics of SUSE Linux. It does assume you've already established a base knowledge of Linux commands. The end of chapter reviews and labs are some of the better parts of this book. The included CD has a digital copy of the book and all of its lab content, although not sequentially placed as in the physical book. If you have a basic understanding of most Linux distros you'll be able to learn easily the nuances of SUSE.

Good, but get the potty book first if you're training

First, note that this is not the same illustration as the tv show. Doesn't bother my son, but it's a little odd if you're used to the other. Second, this is about nighttime diapers/training. If you're using this as a lesson for daytime training, get the potty time book (same series, different cover); this is a sequel of sorts. Third, doesn't matter in terms of buying the book, but fyi that the pages are laminated or something. Coated with plastic. Again, just a little odd. Story is fine. Does its job, but isn't terribly interesting.

Best Potty Book Out There!

There are allot of potty books out there but this one is well written in a story mode, not just " I go pee" or "I go poo". It's wrote from the perspective of a toddler/pre-schooler and how they go about their day, and why it's important to use the toilet. If you let them watch Caillou then it's a great start because they'll be familiar with the character. I didn't know that the pages and cover are a plastic/vinyl like material which is AWESOME if they want to sit on the potty with it, you wipe it off with a disinfectant wipe or something and your good to go. Smart thinking, a potty book does go with the kid to the potty and accidents happen so this was a well thought out idea! This is the second book. I am leaving the same review for the first book "Caillou: Potty Time" as I got them both at the same time. One is about learning to use the toilet, and the second (this one) is more about the continued good reasons to stay dry.

My 14 month old daughter loves books. This one is particularly ideal as the pages cannot be torn and the book is large and colorful. Very handy introducing potty training with a familar face.

Good read if you like technology

I have yet to find a textbook I liked, but this one isn't half bad. This is probably the best one I've read after over 100 credits. I do have a bias that I really like technology and find it interesting. If you like computers this textbook can be interesting, if not you picked the wrong class.

The real world examples are great and really help you understand how the topics connect to today's business world. This book is also very current with an entire chapter dedicated to Facebook and another for Google. And if you ever wanted to know how the internet really works, you'll actually understand after reading this book. I found the explanations of technology to be very easy to understand as well. The biggest strength of this book is the style of writing. It's not overly wordy or complicated (to me), just written in English as though the author was having a conversation.

I'm not sure what book the other reviewer was reading but I seem to have had the exact opposite experience. There are lots of subtitles, bold words, and vocabulary definitions. There are also review questions at the end of each chapter (which is where my professor got most of his test questions). I also have the black and white version, and the pages are made of standard book paper and are not at all shiny, which is great.

Only read excerpts, but looks really promising!

I stumbled across an online version of this book, which allowed you to print off individual chapters, when I was trying to find something to help my non-techie manager understand terms like "application servers" and "web services" and all of that. It's hard to judge as I'm a techie, but it seemed to present the material in a straight-forward (if not at times perhaps a touch TOO simplistic) manner.

I read another section of a chapter about web site vulnerabilities, as our manager was having a hard time understanding why there might be security aspects with our code -- his logical assumption from a non-technical background was that you had to tell the system what you wanted to do, so you didn't have a lot of options.

I've not read the whole book, but the sections I went looking for seemed like they would be useful in presenting information to a manager who wanted to learn more, but wasn't sure where to look. There are sections on social media, distributed applications, e-commerce systems, what exactly programmers do when they 'write software', what open source software is and why it is, databases, cloud computing, and more.

So worth a look, in terms of content, I think.

Essential reading

I've read several chapters of this book and it does a great job of explaining information systems for anyone who might not have a strong IT background. The book uses relevant real-world examples that students will finding interesting (i.e. the chapters on Netflix and Facebook). As a current MBA student, this book has helped me tremendously to tie together aspects of IT and management that will undoubtedly play a role in my future career. I also appreciate that it is written in a very engaging style that keeps you entertained while learning. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to better understand the impact of information systems / information technology in the real world.
