It is like having a pharmacy consult sitting next to you

This book now slightly outdated, has two very valuable features. First it is very thorough. Practically every drug and its therapeutic application is discussed. Second the discussion is not just a factual presentation in the PDR sense but an attempted detailed clinical evaluation. Specific patient scenerio's are portrayed with various choices, considerations and outcomes. The patient Rx question is reviewed as if the particular patient is before you and you are on the phone with the pharmacy consult. I find it very useful to gain a picture of a careful, slow and detailed evaluation of proper patient Rx practices. This is not written as a quick reference guide, it is a course in itself on clinical Rx methods and approaches. It is a wonderful book to add to your library. I have no doubt that it's approach will provide better patient care. What it needs is an on-line update feature.

Nice.

Applied Therapeutics is a very detailed, thorough, and informative compilation of assorted health care matters.

The text is easy to read and the numerous sample cases studies in each chapter ensures that the reader fully understands and is able to apply the information presented. It is also an excellent method to reinforce the enormous amount of information health care providers are presented with in daily practice.

The free CD-ROM (which you must request on their website with a coupon code attached in the back of the book) is a very portable version of this hefty textbook.

A word of caution: This is defintely not an "introductory" book. A little working knowledge of biology, pharmacology, and disease states is a must.

Overall, awesome textbook for interning students.

Applied "In-Patient" Therapeutics

This is a wonderful book for clinicians, despite its emphasis on medications and treatments used mainly in an "in-patient" setting. Its references are numerous and credited and presents its integrated information on a plethora of categories in pathological diseases in the forms of vignettes. I LOVE this book! The topics discussed are never overbearing in content, but gives just enough depth within each topic addressed to give the reader a firm hold of an effective visual on the subject matter (i.e. parkinson's disease, HIV pateints and geriatrics). Being a future clnician myself, I highly recommend this book for all present and future practitioners.

A DETAILED ACCOUNT OF THE HISTORY AND ENGINEERING

Author Mark Finnan displays his talent at research and love of history, both of which make this book an excellent reference for anyone interested in the mystery of Oak Island. Finnan is a fine writer, and adds a nice human-interest angle in which he details some of the lives of those who have sought the treasure. The first few chapters provide a detailed history in the early colonization of Nova Scotia and the area surrounding Oak Island. However, most of the book provides well written detail of step by step efforts at recovering the treasure, engineering accomplishments, and both geological and archaeological findings on the island, all while telling the story of those who have sacrificed everything to find it in the last 200 years. The book includes some photos, sketches, and excerpts from early accounts and records of the search. The only criticism I have is Finnan's frequent references to the Freemason's involvement throughout the book, culminating in the last few chapters which are devoted to Finnan's own ludicrous theory of what is at the bottom of the treasure Pit. Other than that, it's an excellent guide to anyone wanting the scoop on Oak Island.

Excellent general history of this fascinating enigma.

This is an excellent overview of what has to be one of the most puzzling structures on the face of the earth. Despite the complexity of the workings on Oak Island, there is absolutely no record of who constructed the "Money Pit" or why. Mr. Finnan provides a very readable summary of the various abortive attempts to get to the bottom of the shaft, and to find whatever is hidden down there (if anything at all). He also shows restraint in his obligatory "author's own theory" of what lies down there, opting for the Original Manuscripts of Shakespeare Theory, which is perhaps a rather weak excuse for such an elaborate structure, but a colorful theory nonetheless. A good weekend read, well worth the price.

About the Author
Riccardo Rebonato is Global Head of Rates and FX Analytics at PIMCO, and a visiting lecturer in Mathematical Finance at Oxford University (OCIAM). He has previously held positions as Head of Risk Management and Head of Derivatives Trading at several major international financial institutions. Dr Rebonato has been on the Board of ISDA (2002-2011) and still serves on the Board of GARP (2001 to present). He is the author of several books in finance and an editor for several journals (International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Finance, Journal of Risk, Applied Mathematical Finance, Journal of Risk for Financial Institutions).

Alexander Denev is a Senior Team Leader in the Risk Models department at The Royal Bank of Scotland. He is specialised in Credit Risk, Regulations, Asset Allocation and Stress Testing, and has previously worked in management roles at the European Investment Bank, Soci�t� G�n�rale and the National Bank of Greece.

Great book! Finally a structural approach to understanding risk and not just one based on historical statistical measures.
I recommend this book to all interested in a new approach to portfolio management.
On the practical side, the book starts by explaining causality and why it should replace statistics in modern finance. A lengthy
description of Bayesian Nets follows before switching back to problems in risk management. One thing I found particularly useful is the construction and the analysis of a stress scenario from scratch and its subsequent application to a concrete asset management problem.
Maybe the book is too lengthy and sometimes difficult but it is worth going through it.

Bleeding edge of Risk Management

Rebonato and Denev present a truly groundbreaking approach to stress testing methodology. Risk models based exclusively on historical data have proven their shortcomings by failing to warn us about recent major events that shook the financial world, indicating that a traditional frequentist approach is long due for an overhaul.

Book is mathematically sound and technical enough to allow you to cook your own solutions, but I'd love to see some Matlab code in the future. I do recommend reading it if you wish to stay on the bleeding edge of risk management.

Although the book is primarily targeting technically-oriented readers, the first chapters carefully introduce and describe the essence of the authors’ methodology with causality and transparency of the model at its core, making it very accessible to the broader audience. Highly recommend it to both finance professionals and economists to gain more insight into cutting-edge risk modelling.

For millennia humans relied on mythical or biblical accounts to conjure up a birth date for our planet. Astronomer Edmund Halley used the amount of salt in the oceans as his calendar. The great Newton ventured at writing a chronology that took most of the stories of Greek kings and heroes at face value. But as French geophysicist Richet tells readers, people didn't get serious about ascertaining the age of the Earth until the Enlightenment, when researchers tried to figure the amount of heat lost by the Earth to reckon backward to its molten youth. But a firm date—4.5 billion years—couldn't be established until the discovery of radioactive elements to date everything from textiles to stones. Richet writes in a meandering European style as he draws in figures from other fields (who would have guessed that Voltaire was Newton's principal advocate on the Continent?) to fill out his story. His writing occasionally plods along, and attempts at humor sometimes fall flat, although these may be just hazards of translation. Geology and natural science buffs will discover a rich, baroquely embellished birthday cake to dig into and enjoy. 12 half-tones, 27 line drawings.

Stretching the clock

These days nearly anybody can cite the idea of relativity with the Einsteinian comparison of our perception of time if we're sitting on a hot stove or next to a pretty girl. It took many centuries and controversies before a realistic view of time was developed. The theories and research, as Richet presents it, were long confined to the Mediterranean and European nations. He simply passes over time-keepers in Asia or the Western Hemisphere to launch his discussion with the Book of Genesis. From there he takes us on an encyclopaedic tour of Western European science and how its findings led to a more precise determination of the age of our planet. The original title [in French], was "The Age of the Earth: Toward the Discovery of the Immensity of Time." A far more accurate label for this work.

Considerations of time began as philosophical questions. The obvious passage of time, days, "moonths" and seasons were practical matters, but were clearly cyclical. Even advanced cultures, such as Pharaonic Egypt, restarted the calendar with each new ruler. Linear time, Richet notes, was a significant break with past thinking about time. Significantly, the concept postulated an identifiable beginning - first of time, then of the Earth itself. From what he calls the "Mosaic Chronology", the new idea became the focus of a search for the age of our planet. But a novel concept didn't provide new ways of measuring time for many centuries.

One teasing bit of evidence, known even by the ancients, were fossils. Seashells found in rocks high in mountains were an enigma. It was a long time before they were accepted as something once organic instead of simply anomalous stones. The very means of forming rocks was debated. Volcanoes were a manifest means, but later, the possibility of river or shoreline sediments hardening was debated. It was clear that layered rocks were likely former silt, but how long did the process take, and why were some strata folded over? One French diplomat in Egypt studied erosion and sediment and proposed the Earth was over two billion years old! Contrasted with the Biblical assumption that declared the planet to be only a few thousand years in age, this declaration was quickly dismissed by scholars. Later, as physics and chemistry improved as disciplines, did a new age in the millions become more readily accepted.

In this debate, Richert singles out a Victorian Englishman as the pivotal figure. William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, emerged as the "voice of authority" in dating the Earth. In one of his more famous pronouncements he dismissed Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection with an assessment of the sun's age at no more than 10 million years. Although new calculations brought some revision, Kelvin sustained his viewpoint for decades. Physics, however, was on the verge of new discoveries. Richert recounts the discovery of radioactivity and the elements that produce it. The idea that a rock might "decay" astounded scientists and the public alike. Further work demonstrated that the sun used a different process to generate heat - it wasn't just a cooling gas ball. Links were made with radioactive rocks in the Earth's crust and what was transpiring in the centre. Suddenly, the age of the planet increased many-fold. In 1965, a researcher still rarely noted, Claire Patterson, was able to date the Earth at over 4.5 billion years in age. In a glaring omission, Richert fails to note that this date was later confirmed by rocks returned from the Moon.

There are other omissions Richert might have included. Alfred Wegener's insight leading to a theory of continental drift, while not providing a dating scheme, demonstrated a process requiring many aeons to achieve. The Earth's magnetic field, which unaccountably flips the North and South magnetic poles, contributed to the concept of an ancient Earth. Perhaps these may be considered small lapses in such a detailed study. In supporting his epic, Richert uses the page reference for footnoting, but adds suggestions for further reading at the end. He also adds an interesting innovation in listing works about the major figures in his account. More authors should take note of this technique. Although Richert's prose is a bit dense, the wealth of information in this book brings the reader many rewards. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

Essential perspective on note taking

Tony Buzan's book (I read the 2010 BBC Active edition) has been a very actionable book for me. I was feeling at an impasse with committing my plans and thoughts into paper and couldn't place why it took me so long to write so little and why I couldn't remember or get excited for taking notes, even for projects I liked. The book pointed out, correctly in my case, that linear, text-heavy notes don't stimulate a lot of areas in the brain and thus require more repetition to stick. In contrast, less wordy maps that incorporate visual cues (graphics, arrows, font change, colors ...) activate a lot more brain regions and so stick better. As a bonus, adding aesthetics to a map (doodling and embellishing the branches, keywords...) makes it memorable and stimulates further associations, not to mention actually making it fun. And I am no artist by any stretch.

Buzan amply provides up to date reputable research from cognitive psychology to highlight what works for the brain in cognitive tasks such as remembering, keeping flow and analysing. The mind map, he constantly reminds, is supposed to somewhat mirror what the brain is doing when it associates, remembers... Also, the book practices what he preaches and is filled with colors, both in the text and with colorful and picture rich mind maps. His guidelines are well illustrated. The book also gives light in-chapter exercises so that the point is brought home then and there. It is easy to digest with chapters seldom topping 10 pages.

Here and there, Buzan plugs his iMindmap software but the plugs are localized to that chapter for the most part and not very intrusive.

For me chapters 8, on techniques, and 13 on the note taking process as a whole, including how to attack a book in waves and factoring time IN ADVANCE, were gold mines of good ideas. I wish I had this stuff when I was in school. Would have extracted more from those big textbooks. Buzan reminds us that notes are really conversations between us (what we associate with the material) and the author (what he or she associates). Remembering the material is just one goal of note taking, and analysis (which comes from the structure of the map, for instance) and creativity (in adding our associations to the ideas as well as the author's) also play a role while taking notes. It's a perspective I've seldom heard and which makes sense to me. The book is filled with those insights and not just in the abstract; there are examples everywhere.

My first few mind maps were, as expected, uneven and not following all guidelines but with each one and reskimming paragraphs in those two chapters, the maps improved and got better. Revising existing maps allowed me to commit them better to memory and further pin down what the main ideas I'm building around are.

All in all, I highly recommend this book for people stuck in text land and feeling something missing in how they understand the subject matter they are working with.

Updated pop fluff

This book is a pop fluff, NY Times best seller wannabe. Mind Maps are a watered down version of concept mapping.

Do me a favor real quick. Do a google image search for these 2 terms.
1. concept map
2. mind map

When I see the results of searching concept map, and zoom in on any random map, what I see is legible. I can take away some meaning from the map. When I see the results of searching mind map, its like I'm standing 100 feet over a land fill and looking straight down. It all looks like garbage to me. Mess. Now click on a random "mind map", 9 times out of 10 it still looks like garbage. Its not good for collaboration or future reference if I can't read it.

The last thing I would like you to consider is...
J. Novak (the creator of concept mapping) is a Science Education major.
Buzan is a Psychology major.

A psychology major? No wonder the entire book reads like a sales pitch.

The Mind Map book also tells me in almost every chapter that I need to get some special mind mapping paper or pad. The cool thing about concept mapping is that special pads of paper are not required. Thats right, concept mapping can be done on 99cent pads of paper you get at the grocery store. yaay

Beautiful packaged book

I thought this is a great book after I read the review and I did have high hope that I could be more creative after I master this book. I even bought the iMindMap software. I faithfully followed this book to make mind maps whenever I am pondering some thing. There is really nothing much to this subject I guess, I just don't sense any difference of me after using this software over 2 months.

I like the design of this book, it makes my book shelf looks better. I also like the software, it has pretty neat and easy to follow user interface but it really doesn't unlock my creativity or boost my memory. It is good computer game to play and it generates beautiful pictures. May be it is just me.

The best thing I have read on Elon Musk so far (and from what I understand, the only one that he has participated in himself). Vance is an excellent writer, and you may or may not be familiar with him from Bloomberg Business and other high profile writings. You also get some great insight into the overall ecosystem around Musk - his companies (SpaceX and Tesla primarily), relationships with other companies and gov entities, as well as the important people around him. Many bios give you a timeline of the person, but little insight into the broader context and I appreciated that in this book.

You get unique insight into his personal relationships, how he coped with things that went wrong (not always a pretty story), and how he manages through both failure and success. Since you learn so much about his childhood and formative years, you get a good grounding on why he is the way he is, and how those relationships developed.

Finally, you get a lot of detail around 'green' industry, space exploration, etc. which really fills out this ecosystem and delivers an inspiring and educational view of one of the most intriguing people of our lifetimes. The book almost seems to ask "What are you going to go out and reinvent?" Well worth reading and even gifting to friends who may be fans.

Incredibly thorough insight into Elon Musk's life and companies

When I walked into Barnes & Noble two weeks ago, I wasn't actually looking to purchase a book. Usually, I go in, browse for 30 minutes, and get out. But when I walked around to the Physics and Science section, the first thing I saw was Elon Musk's face.

Inevitably, I picked it up and began reading.

2 pages in, I decided I was in this for the long haul and sat on the floor, right there in the middle of the store. 15 pages in, my friends finally found me and forced me to leave. But I couldn't part with this. I needed this book. Those first 15 pages captured me like so few books do (in fact, only one book in the past year has totally stolen my attention like this).

So I bought Elon Musk feeling on top of the world and excited to keep reading.

I travel a lot between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, PA, so, since I'm in the middle of taking classes in Pittsburgh, I swore to only read this book on the bus, because I knew once I picked it up again, I wouldn't put down.

I was right.

The next day, I got on the bus, got to reading, and tuned out the world. Three hours later, I was nearly halfway through -- and WOW. Vance's writing style flowed right through my mind. No clunky sentences, no jarring phrases. It's such an easy book to read, despite the complex nature of the contents.

Elon Musk, if you don't know, is a biography. Yes, a biography. You'd expect the case-study of someone's life to be boring and uneventful, dragging until the very end.

This wasn't the case at all.

Vance opens the book at an interview with Elon Musk himself. The first line, a quote from Musk, "Do you think I'm insane?", perfectly captures the whole context of the biography. Because as you experience the story, as you see the challenges Musk went through to reach the pinnacle he's at today, the question nags at you. Musk isn't soft-spoken, or easy on his employees, or a man who kicks his legs up on his desk and snoozes while his companies mill around him. Vance shows how Musk is both the CEO and an employee of his companies, simultaneously the teacher and student. He gets in the work, asks all the right questions, gives all the right orders. His vision is THE vision, and if you get in the way, Musk has been known to fire you on the spot.

Musk breaks every convention, every tradition, every standard. Vance takes you deep into the details, from Musk's childhood and lineage in South Africa, all the way to Canada and the United States, where the bulk of the story unfolds.

When Musk looks at big businesses, he sees unmovable behemoths that refuse to change their methodologies. American innovation became a thing of the past. Technology and industry was growing - but nowhere near as fast as it should. So we follow Musk's journey from his small start-ups, Zip2 and X.com, and move into his larger, more permanent ventures, namely SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity.

I myself am a huge fan of Elon Musk. Still, until the past year or two, I only thought of him as "that guy who made SpaceX" and "that guy who runs Tesla." Until reading this book, I never knew the struggle -- no, the hell he went through to make and keep these companies. You think, oh, he just has a lot of money.

Yeah, now he does. But did you know SpaceX and Tesla were hours away from going bankrupt? Did you know that the Falcon 1 rocket kept failing, and one more failed launch literally meant the end of SpaceX? Did you know SpaceX tested these rockets on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and would fix problems they encountered in a matter of days, as compared to months by standard companies?

This book is the first time Musk has explicitly let anyone interview him for a biography. Aside from a few questionable quotes that have been publicly denounced by Musk after the publication of this book, we're still given a tremendous amount of insight into his head and how he runs the companies. Vance interviewed more than 300 people and spent over two years compiling this account. And I have to give credit to how up-to-date the information is. There are several events Vance mentions that occurred into 2015, such as the first landing attempt of Falcon 9 on the sea barge, which took place in January, and he refers to the second attempt as being in a couple weeks, which means that Vance included this information on a very tight deadline, probably mid-March (the second landing attempt happened on April 14, 2015).

I want to congratulate you, Mr. Vance. Well done. Very well done. I'm going to reread this book in a few weeks (probably after the scheduled June 19th third Falcon 9 landing attempt, this time on solid ground, as opposed to a barge). Anyone who wants a ridiculously thorough insight into Elon Musk's life and companies should read this book. It had me from Page 1 all the way to Page 363, and even the appendices that come after.

This is an incredibly inspiring book, a important look into a game-changing business strategy, and a valuable lesson to the world. As Musk says, "If something is important enough, even if the odds are against you, you should still do it."

Well written, general overview

Solid, well researched book about Musk's early life, early companies (Zip2 and PayPal), and current companies (Tesla, SpaceX and SolarCity). Throughout the book, Vance doesn't just let a startling assertion or quote stand still, he researches events to give the reader a balanced view of what transpired. This is especially important as there have more than a few highly charged emotional events in Musk's life and it would have been all too easy for a biographer to highlight the sensational at the expense of providing insight about complex events.

Vance starts the biography by delving just enough into Musk's early life to help understand who he has become.He then launches into fairly detailed accounts of his early companies (Zip2 and PayPal). These accounts are invaluable as there is little else available about these companies that is reliable and not agenda driven reporting.

SpaceX gets the most coverage in the book, befitting Musk's passion and time spent, although there is a reasonable amount of time devoted to Tesla and a relatively quick overview of SolarCity.

Oddly enough for a 400 page book, I sometimes wished he would provide a more blow by blow account - for instance there was no insight at all into any board meetings in any of the companies. In addition, Vance does not delve in any real depth into the complex technology that Musk has created, relegating the very few verbatim explanations from Musk to footnotes. There was a lot of boosterism about the companies, and while Vance did try to describe a timeline, in the end the book had a lot of unconnected vignettes and stories.

Having said all this, it is a very readable, very interesting book. The 2008 triple Musk meltdown (personal life, SpaceX and Tesla) was gripping. Most people who have not been watching Musk's every move for the past 20 years will find lots of new information here, presented in a very balanced and entertaining way.
