Good for football culture, kinda weak and jargony on actual rules
By Shamus Macgillicuddy
I like the straightforwardness of the writing, and the insight into the appeal of the game. Alas, if you're an outsider hoping to learn the game from scratch, you're going to have a lot of trouble--after teaching you rudimentary terms, the writers start describing the game as if you've been watching it all your life, tossing barely-introduced jargon around all over the place. I was really disappointed that the one aspect of the game I was most interested in (the actual GAME) was so poorly rendered.

good book for a non beginner
By B. Einhorn
I read Football for dummies and wanted something more indepth. This book met my needs. It covers how each position is supposed to function, and a number of formations. Between this and playing Madden 10 on the Wii I now have a better understanding of whats going on. I now notice where the half back, full back/tight line up, as well as the defensive alignment.
Experienced football fans will get nothing from this book, but newer fans who already have some knowledge will appreciate this book.

You will know football even though you are not an American
By J. Murphy
I'm a Chinese girl and never watched any American football games in Hong Kong until I married to an American and moved to United States one and half years ago. He is a football fan and he keeps track his team every day, not to mention especially during the regular season every Sunday.

I started to watch football games with him, and I liked it a lot. Now, I understand why so many American like football. I asked many questions while I was watching the game, because I wanted to understand it more. Therefore, I read this book last year and it gave me a lot of basic information in an easy way. More interesting is the book gives many statistics and facts that I was impressed by the football business. Anyone has no idea about football, this book can help.

Now, my husband was surprised that I knew football so well and we discussed football a lot during the regular season this year. This book helps us to have more conversation topics.

"A grand yet intimate look at the Sun King, a tale rich with detail and action."—Library Journal (Starred Review, one of the best historical novels of the year)

Before Versailles transports you to a world of secret passions and plots, a world of duplicity and malice...a world that created one of the best–known monarchs to grace the French throne.

At the most decisive time in the young king's life, Louis XIV can taste the danger. His court teems with greed and corruption, the wrong woman draws him into a wrenching love affair, and a mysterious boy in an iron mask haunts the woods. The untried ruler is coming into his own in 1661, and Louis XIV must face what he is willing to sacrifice for honor and for love.

Meticulously researched and gorgeously brought to life by New York Times bestselling author Karleen Koen, Before Versailles offers up a sumptuous, authentic exploration of a time that forged a man into a king.

Praise for Before Versailles:

"In this magnificently written and researched novel, Karleen Koen brings to vibrant life the early years and loves of the future Sun King."—Jean M. Auel, author of The Clan of the Cave Bear and the Land of Painted Caves

"A baroque cornucopia spilling over with intrigue, passion, jealousy, ambition, and rich historical detail, Before Versailles offers a glittering glimpse of the crucial months that shaped Louis XIV into Europe's most powerful monarch."—Eleanor Herman, author of Sex with Kings

I’ve enjoyed Karleen Koen’s writing since I first read Through a Glass Darkly many years ago, so I was delighted to have the chance to read her latest, Before Versailles. Louis XIV is a fascinating monarch and Koen has rendered him perfectly in these pages: he’s smart, dashing, cunning, manipulative--everything one expects from a King, even one as young as twenty-two. Koen has wisely chosen a few months in 1661 during the early reign of Louis in which to tell this story; these are perhaps the most decisive months of his monarchy and she shows opposing forces pulling him in many directions as he makes his decisions, as well as his reasons for making them. I was intrigued by the lives of the women closest to him: Louise de la Baume le Blanc, the young beauty who is just learning the ways of the court when she is seduced by the King, and the gorgeous Princess Henriette, Louis’s brother’s wife who loves the taste of danger and isn’t above flirting (perhaps a bit too much!) with the receptive King. I loved reading about Louis’s mother--the lover of Louis’s former advisor Cardinal Mazarin--a profound influence in his political decisions. Karleen Koen leaves us wondering if she can be trusted? Koen also dramatically weaves in a scary and mysterious subplot involving a boy in an iron mask, a poor child who could ruin everything for the young and virile King.

Lush descriptions jump off the page and into the imagination and by the time you’ve finished, you’ll feel you’ve lived a few intimate months with these vivid characters. If you’ve not yet visited the chateau de Fontainebleau or seen the magnificent gardens of Versailles you’ll be planning your own tour de France soon after reading the last page, inspired by Karleen Koen's fascinating research and intriguing exploration of the young Louis and his entourage. I strongly encourage you to read Koen’s latest, Before Versailles.

Vive la France!

" - Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell

" I have been a fan of Karleen Koen for many years since I read the first book Through a Glass Darkly and she did not disappoint me with this book. A historical fiction novel that will appeal to readers who love the genre. I thoroughly enjoyed it. " - Celtic Lady's Reviews

"I read this book on sunny afternoons during the summer with a tall glass of iced tea while I sat under the tree in the backyard. And once in a while, when the breeze blows I can almost imagine myself transported to Versailles as vividly described as it is in the book. The description of the characters and their setting is so colorful that I easily got lost in that world, immersed in the intrigues and machinations of court life. Just my kind of book for a summer escape!" - Found Not Lost

"This book is a veritable feast for anyone interested in 17th century France and its star, Louis XIV. " - Thoughts from Lady Tess

"What a web deceit made, its strands strangling the guilty and the innocent alike."
By Luan Gaines
Koen has a unique talent for ferreting out the particularities of history in character and place, the result authentic and satisfying as a hearty meal. Before Versailles describes twenty-two year old King Louis XIV's early days on the throne of France. After the death of Cardinal Mazarin in 1661, hand-picked successor to Cardinal Richelieu, Louis breaks from the tradition of monarchs willing to forfeit the affairs of state to powerful counselors, giving much consideration to the men who aspire to be his advisors, particularly his Minister of Finance, Viscount Nicholas Fouquet, his brother, Philippe, Duke d' Orleans and Philippe's closest confidant, the Count de Guiche. None is privy to the quiet rebellion and political maturation of an extraordinary young ruler with an incisive intelligence and the patience to mold his kingdom into an absolute monarchy.

Fully-fleshed characters inhabit the young king's court, the secrets and passions, plots and assignations in service to winning favor or usurp power, deadly serious games where the future of a kingdom is at stake. Behind the frivolous faade of merrymakers at Fontainebleau, Louis newly wed to the Spanish Marie Terese, Philippe the proud husband of the delectable and fun-loving beauty Henriette, the serious business of governance is played on two levels, the gossip-riddled daily activities of the court and the quiet corridors of power, where deals and fortunes are made, Louis's relative inexperience pitted against the sophisticated machinations of a man whose pride rivals that of a king. Fouquet is a formidable adversary, Louis certainly his equal, a network of spies sharing information in exchange for favor, the laughing faces of courtiers hiding duplicity and malice, greed and corruption.

Louis is the center of a young court in flux: the Queen Mother's affiliation with Mazarin and the loyalties bred of that union; lady-in-waiting Louise de la Baume le Blanc, an anomaly in a jaded court; the malleable Philippe, made more vulnerable by his weakness; Jean-Baptiste Colbert, silent chronicler of the government's excesses; a mysterious boy in an iron mask; the enchanting Henriette, basking in admiration, tempted by a flirtation with the king; and the ambitious Louis XIV, still subject to the vagaries of his heart, betrayed yet resolute, carrying the weight of France's future on his shoulders. While the male characters are defined by ambition and the arrogance of entitlement, Koen's females are equally devious: a Queen Mother clutching her crucifix with an iron fist; the thwarted affection of Countess de Soissons; the claculated intrigues of the Duchess de Chevreuse; foolish Duchess d' Orleans, inhaling the heady air of celebrity, tampering with men's affections; and the kind-hearted Louise, her lack of guile a balm to a besieged king. With a delicate balance of threat and subterfuge, Louis's secret schemes come to fruition in a breathtaking climax as the dominoes fall in a swift yet delicate execution forged of patience and deliberation. Luan Gaines/2011.

A bit underwhelmed
By Misfit
Koen's latest book tackles a short period in the life of a young Louis XIV. Cardinal Mazarin is dead, and Louis is now in control of the government - a government seriously short of cash - although the Superintendent of Finances sure does have a pocketful of it. Louis is newly married to Maria Teresa of Spain, but at the moment he only has eyes for his brother's new wife, Henriette (sister to Charles II) and Henriette definitely reciprocates the feelings.

Meantime Louise de La Vallire, one of Henriette's ladies in waiting, becomes involved in the mystery surrounding a young man whose face is hidden behind an iron mask. What, if any connection is this young boy to the royal family, and why is someone so desperate to keep his existence a secret? Yep, there's a whole lot more to it than that but I'll not spoil, although if you are familiar with it all you know where Louise's story goes from here...

Despite a set of circumstances that promises a deliciously meaty, scandalous read, I found this rather underwhelming, especially coming from the author who gave us Through a Glass Darkly (on my all time favorites list). The characters were all rather flat and lifeless (even Philippe and de Guiche were not as hateable as they should be), and there was definitely not much chemistry between Louis and Louise. The repetitive sentences drove me seriously batty,

"The handsome young king of France was hesitant before her. The handsome young king of France desired her. The handsome young king of France loved her."

In the end, this isn't a bad book by any means, but it doesn't have the kind of punch Louis and his love life deserves. I have read the entire Musketeer series by Alexandre Dumas (part of which tells of the relationship between Louis and Louise as well as his own take on the Man in the Iron Mask), and I couldn't help comparing his take on the characters as opposed to Koen's, and Dumas definitely wins out. Library only, then buy it if you love it.

Interested in trying the Dumas books? Here's the series in order and they are available free on Kindle. Can't speak for the quality of the translation on these so enter at your own risk (they are free after all), but if you're looking for a dead tree version I'd recommend the Oxford World's Classics Editions.

An entertaining book.
By Bookreporter
I've always had a soft spot for the antics of the French court --- even more so than the English courts --- and I'm the type of person who can't turn down a story about the Tudors. In books revolving around the monarchy, whether French or English, one can't have a story without a mistress. Let's face it, that's what makes the story. Isn't that why these books are so much fun? Oh it is, and Karleen Koen doesn't disappoint.

Cardinal Mazarin, the French prime minister, is dead. Louis XIV, only 22 years old, is now king of France, and a king with power. That power is not yet firmly grasped, but he's intent on learning to yield it fully. Unaware of many of the financial arrangements his mother and the Cardinal made while ruling in his stead, he's in for a surprise when he finally takes it upon himself to investigate. Unsure of his financial minister's monetary affairs and how mingled they are with the crown's accounts, he has suspicions and employs a faithful counselor to help him sort through the courtly promises and financial advice being offered.

To add another distraction, Louis has fallen in love with his brother Philippe's wife, Princess Henriette, a woman captivating not only the king but the entire French court. A man not used to being denied, Louis attempts to make Henriette his mistress against the wishes of not only his brother but also his mother, who believes it will be his downfall. He is married to a woman he greatly admires for her breeding and royal pedigree, but he doesn't truly love her and is looking for a distraction she can't provide. Louis knows it's the idea of passion and surprise that comes from his illicit affair with Henriette, but he can't help himself. To calm the court, Henriette suggests he flirt with one of her maids, a shy but very pretty young woman named Louise. Then something happens that he didn't expect --- Louis finds he might have fallen in love.

BEFORE VERSAILLES started slowly. It was almost as if it was waiting for Louis to find his footing as king; once he found his confidence, so did the story. While the affair between Louis and Henriette is more intense, his affair with Louise is completely the opposite (but, in a way, more satisfying). All the court intrigue requirements are met and then some. Oddly, the financial scandal is also quite good, adding a harder edge to what is mostly a love story. It's a nice contrast for Louis as he grows into his role as a king. What he's dealing with on the political level makes you see why he craves love in the quieter parts of his life.

In stories about kings and mistresses, politics sometimes gets pushed to the side and becomes background noise. That doesn't happen here, and it's refreshing. There is a small side story involving Louise that feels slightly out of place, but it's the only stumble in an otherwise entertaining book.

Building on the previous works "Endoscopic Anatomy for Neurosurgery" and "Keyhole Concept in Neurosurgery," this book offers a systematic overview of keyhole approaches in the daily work of a neurosurgeon. The approaches, strategies, indications and technical details described here are complemented by anatomical pictures, schemes, and artists’ illustrations, and analyzed with regard to geometric boundaries and the topography of the target structures.

HAVING HIS BABY

Emily Maguire's gruff-as-granite brother-in-law had always seemed intimidating and remote. But now that Emily was pregnant, widowed and humiliated by her late husband, Dillon was suddenly sticking too close for comfort. Why?

Oddly protective of Emily and her in vitro baby-to-be, Dillon used his muscular exterior to serve her Jell-O, to nurse her through morning sickness—even to become her birthing coach. But what unspoken secret made this rough-hewn male treat her so tenderly? And why did she respond so shamelessly to his raw masculinity? It almost felt as if Dillon was the father of her child—almost as if he loved her!

Interesting book
By Anza Carrillo
Emily doesn't know what hit her. One day, she believes that she has a perfect life - a wonderful, caring doctor husband who adores her, a baby on the way, and a comfortable, financially-secure lifestyle. The next day, her life literally goes up in flames - she discovers that her "devoted husband" really had a mistress on the side and had died in her arms from smoke inhalation, her life isn't so financially secure thanks to her husband's reckless spending, and everything she had ever hoped for is gone. The only small comfort in her life is the child she is expecting, her own little miracle baby.
Dillon, Emily's brother-in-law, is determined to take care of his brother's wife, despite having kept her at a distance for the seven years of her marriage. Emily does not know that her handsome, brooding brother-in-law has been in love with her since he first met her. Emily also does not know that it isn't her husband's child she is carrying, after all - but Dillon's child. Can Dillon win Emily's heart after finally given the opportunity, or will the secrets he keeps tear them apart before they can begin?
I really enjoyed this story. Dillon was a great hero - strong, intense, and fiercely devoted to Emily and the baby. Emily was also a great heroine for him - she too had a strong character, which was obvious when she kept going even after the fullness of her husband's betrayals became known to her. Some of the secondary characters (particularly Adele, Emily's mother-in-law) were one-dimensional and could have been fleshed out a little more, but that's not a major flaw in the story line or anything like that. Dillon and Emily's relationship progressed over time and seemed completely natural, almost like this could really happen in real life :) So if you want to spend a few hours with a pleasant, heart-warming read, pick up this book! :)

Truly Romantic
By chb-book addict
Yes, I know this is a Silhouette book but its a great read!

Emily McGuire's husband, prominent doctor Keith McGuire is dead, he was in a fire, in bed with his mistress - in the house he kept for her. Emily has just learned that after years of trying she is finally pregnant and now its all over and her world is in shambles. She had no idea that he was cheating. After going through the funeral and all the gossip, she's ready to start her life over but she needs a job and she doesn't know what to do next. She's never been close to the rest of Keith's family, her mother is dead and she has no other family.

Dillion, Keith's brother has never been friendly to Emily, she feels that he doesn't like her and she's never comfortable with him but after the funeral Dillion steps in and handles all the details - he wants her to rely on him but since she won't he offers her a job and helps her get an apartment (nothing is left after all the bills are paid). After Emily determines that the offer of a job is not a move to give her money for doing nothing she and Dillion become friends. But there are still secrets that need to be told and confessions that need to be made.

I love Ginna Gray books, her later books are very good but these have great story lines and the content is wonderful. When you're in the mood for a hea without too much hassle or drama, this is what I like to read and yes, it does deserve a 5 based on what it is and who wrote it. The best of Silhouette!

Hero fell in love with heroine 1st but his brother married her instead **SPOILERS**
By RomReader
Pregnant heroine accepts the job offer of her recently-deceased husband's brother. She's always felt uncomfortable around him but she has no choice but to accept his job offer due to the huge debts her cheating husband incurred without her knowledge. Hero fell in love with her since they first met 7 years ago but his brother wooed her first. He hid his love for her by being aloof around her but now that she's single, in need, and pregnant with his baby without her knowledge he is compelled to help her as much as she allows him. Heroine warms up to him as she gets to know him in the next few months. His sudden marriage proposal makes her unsure if his motives are solely because of the baby or if she has a chance to be loved by him.

-------------------------------SPOILERS: Don't read below if you don't want to know the book's details------------------------------------------------

What I liked most about this book was the sensitivity & realism Gray gave to the development of heroine's love for Hero. It took her months to reconcile herself with the true nature of her cheating husband and to fall in love with Hero. But in the meantime the build-up of heroine's emotions & sexual awareness of Hero became more intense. Hero's perseverance towards supporting her & hopefully making her love him as a result was touching. Hero wasn't celibate during the 7 years he was pining for her but when she became a widow the other women who visited him were no longer appealing. He stayed celibate during the 11 months he waited for her to reciprocate his attraction.

Hero was quiet, aloof & dominant in general but he showed his sensitivity, caring, & patience by the things he did for heroine. I loved how his assistant-cum-2nd-mother revealed to heroine at the end that Hero kept a picture of her in his desk while she was still married. He acted like he didn't care for her but inside he was a hotbed of deep, pining love for heroine. I understood his reasons for constantly delaying his confession that he was the sperm donor of her baby. He had integrity but his fear of losing her superceded it. I wished the ending was just a tad longer with Hero & heroine discussing Hero's reasons for keeping his secret for her & for more sex scenes.

Recommended.

The reason why, by Cecil Blanche Fitz Gerald Woodham Smith

Nothing in British campaign history has ever equalled the tragic farce that was the Charge of the Light Brigade. In this fascinating study, Cecil Woodham-Smith shows that responsibility for the fatal mismanagement of the affair rested with the Earls of Cardigan and Lucan, brothers-in-law and sworn enemies for more than thirty years. In revealing the combination of pride and obstinacy that was to prove so fatal, the author gives us a picture of a vanished world, in which heroism and military glory guaranteed an immortality impossible in a more cynical age.

One of the Great Books on how the British fought Crimean War "Charge of the Light Brigade"
By J. Holloway
Many a historian rate this as a must read book. Written in the early 1900's it is still being published and read to this day. It is the story of the Charge of the Light Birgade. If you are into British History this is a must read. I read the book over 30 years ago when a college friend recommended it. I ordered it on Amazon a year ago to re-read it, then gave it to a friend lived in Scotland and who is into history. He in turn sent it to his son who makes a living playing bagpipes in Colorado. The book gets into the British psychic, and how command was purchased not always deserved. The battles of the Crimean War have amazed scholars and casual readers alike. The book deals with how the British Office thought and carried out orders as well as details on the battles themselves.

All the Reasons Why
By Jim Muccio
"The Reason Why" by Cecil Woodham-Smith and written in 1954 came as a recommendation through a friend of mine who is currently a major in the British Army. My familiarity with the Charge of the Light Brigade, which occurred during the British, French, and Turkish campaign against the Russians during the Crimean War up until reading this book was lifted from visual snippets from my childhood when my dad would watch the 1936 Hollywood production with Errol Flynn, by the same name, but taking place during the wrong war for the wrong reasons with all the wrong characters, and the often quoted Tennyson poem from which the title originates.

"Their's not to make reply,
Their's not to reason why,
Their's but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred"

I'm glad I read this book and straightened out my truly twisted sense of British history on this one. I also learned a great deal more. This book is a masterpiece and I will feebly attempt to explain why. To understand what really happened during the Battle of Balaclava, Woodham-Smith starts to illustrate the political and military culture within Britain starting just after the turn of the Century and then directly after the British victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. It is very important to understand that British officers did not attend formal professional military schools nor did they move up through the ranks, they bought their commissions and either learned in the field, engaged in self-study if they were interested in subjects such as warfare, or they lead and managed men based on instinct. Officership was entrusted to and required of only the upper social strata -- those who had a stake in the country were those best fit to lead the military, and more importantly were those less likely to turn the military against the social elite, themselves. This was how the stability of the British aristocracy was balanced and maintained -- in peacetime it works -- the military is not going to over-throw the country. During times of war -- it also works since the military with it's sabre now unsheathed, is typically sent abroad. When sound military leaders emerge and victories are secured, the system is self ratifying. When defeats occur abroad, however, the facts can be easily distorted to hide the incompetence of the officer elite and then too the system ratifies itself, or the aristocracy quietly takes care of it's own. The reason why, not the title but the reason the Light Brigade trotted ceremoniously, not galloped, into the valley of death had everything to do with why the British system of officership was a failure and must be changed.

The book is a masterpiece because it combines the domestic sagas of a Jane Austen novel complete with social circles, sex-scandals, and racial prejudices into a great discription of the reality of a military campaign in progress. Not just from the tactical descriptions of the battles as they were set-up and ensued but the logistics of supporting the infantry and the cavalry to get to those battles. After she describes in great detail the unlikely British victory at the Battle of Alma she quotes the Duke of Wellington who said, "Next to a battle lost, there is nothing more dreadful than a battle won", and from her descriptions of the pain and human suffering inflicted on both sides, the Duke was right. Yet Woodham-Smith adds even more to this book, the pure high drama of military incompetence at it's highest as Lord Raglan unwitting observes a battle unfold from his perch deep behind Russian, the enemy, lines. And of Lord Lucan, who want's to be in charge but is never in the right place at the right time. And to the Charge itself, when Captain Edward Nolan, who carried the charge order to Lord Cardigan, and who in a moment of his own clarity, the coup d'oeil that he himself had written about in the calvary manuals he had penned, gallops to the front of the charge to correct Cardigan's fatal misinterpretation of the charge and is ironically cut down by canon fire just before being able to divert the Light Brigade's direction away from the valley of death. High drama, ferocious battle, scandal, intrigue, incompetence, and an outcome that would forever change the way we train our military officers. A must read for every member of the military -- grunt to general officer, for every history buff, and for those who just like to poke fun at the British way of doing business or to understand why it is they do business their way.

Great read for anyone inetrested in 19th century Brittish History and/or military history in general
By Carl D. Todd
Great book. This work illuminates a world during the first half of 19th Britain and of Ireland as well. Plus, it does exactly what the title says - it explains the reasons why the charge of the light brigade was made. But, you will learn a lot more about the main people involved, their lives and personalities. This is indeed a wonderful story very well told.
