Rarely has anyone photographed reality in such an unprettified way as Boris Mikhailov. He captures the unadorned and the natural; in pictures devoid of aesthetic exhaltation, he concentrates on people and their living conditions. On his journeys through Russia, Germany and his Ukrainian homeland, Mikhailov has equally observed the poor, the well-to-do, the outcasts and the homeless. Look at Me, I Look at Water was composed in 1999 at the suggestion of the Heiner Mller-Society when Boris Mikhailov's name was found in one of Heiner Mller's notebooks. With this book Mikhailov is continuing, thematically and conceptionally, what he began with his artist's book Unfinished Dissertation in 1985. The photographs are accompanied by handwritten Russian commentaries, which together give the impression of a private album which narrates stories from a chapter in the artist's life.

Shoes of the Dead, by Kota Neelima

chilling parable about modern-day India. Crushed by successive crop failures and the burden of debt, Sudhakar Bhadra kills himself. The powerful district committee of Mityala routinely dismisses the suicide and refuses compensation to his widow. Gangiri, his brother, makes it his lifes mission to bring justice to the dead by influencing the committee to validate similar farmer suicides. Keyur Kashinath of the Democratic Party first-time member of Parliament from Mityala, and son of Vaishnav Kashinath, the partys general secretary is the heir to his fathers power in Delhi politics. He faces his first crisis; every suicide in his constituency certified by the committee as debt-related is a blot on the partys image, and his competence. The brilliant farmer battles his inheritance of despair, the arrogant politician fights for the power he has received as legacy. Their two worlds collide in a conflict that pushes both to the limits of morality from where there is no turning back. At stake is the truth about inherited democratic power. And at the end, there can only be one winner. Passionate and startlingly insightful, Shoes of the Dead is a chilling parable of modern-day India.

Excellent
By Sheetal Bahl
Shoes of the Dead took me completely by surprise - not because of its portrayal of politics in the Indian capital (which, as a layman, sounds fairly plausible to me), but because it managed to make the politics intensely personal, and moved me in a way very few books have in the last few years. By the end of the book, the Gangiri's (co-protagonist) victories and losses were mine, and when he hurt, I hurt too. The characters, and the book, stayed with me for a long time after I finished it. The book's structuring and language are robust and accessible, and above all, eminently readable.

Strongly recommended.

Book Review: Shoes of the Dead: Fight Between Poor Farmers And Lousy Politics

Shoes of the Dead by Kota Neelima - a hardbound book, published by Rupa Publications, has a neatly woven storyline. It has a strong bunch of negative and positive characters scripted in an interesting and powerful manner. I received this book for review from BlogAdda under their Boook Reviews Program. Kota Neelima is a Political Editor for The Sunday Guardian. She is also undergoing her Research Fellowship for South Asia Studies at John Hopkins University, Washington DC. She already has a twin hit of her previously published novels under her belt - Riverstones, and Death of a Moneylender.

This is a sensitively written book presenting both ends of a typical Indian scenario - where on one hand poor farmers keep following suicide spree due to various reasons as most of them depend heavily on monsoon rains, political and local moneylenders support and living with low temperament always worried about the next meal for their family; political leaders keep taking advantage of these situations with just motive of keeping their vote bank intact with whatever measures they have to take to achieve it. One bad monsoon creates a big debt for a farmer and forces him to get pushed under heavy weight of loans drifting him to more poor and uncertain conditions. Local politicians and moneylenders unite and create a kind of mafia to loot poor farmers and mint money by grabbing their land, money, jewelry and home. Very few who understand this ballgame get screwed badly if they try to resist.

The whole game starts with the suicide of Sudhakar Bhadra who belongs to Gopur village, kills himself out of huge debt and no possibility of any healthy conditions returning back so as to live a normal life. He leaves his wife and two kids behind him. Gangiri (the main lead of this story), when comes to know about it, leaves his teaching job in city and returns back to take care of Sudhakar's family and a single motive of fighting with the poor conditions being faced by other farmers in his village. Sudhakar's wife plea of considering Sudhakar's suicide as debt driven and hence sanctioning relaxation in the payable loans by him gets rejected by the local committee stating it otherwise.

Shoes of the Dead is a fight of poor against rich, good against bad, common man against politics and administration. Overall it is an interesting read passing through various twists.

Shoes of the Dead
By Drac
Shoes of the Dead by Kota Neelima not only have a catching title but also captivating content.
Gangri, whose brother committed suicide owing to all the debts his farming cursed on him, is fighting for a dead man's rights. On the other hand, a young politician Keyur Kashinath, bestowed by political powers transcended due to his father's legacy is looking forward to embark his mark in the dirty politics. When their world collides, what the reader gets is a story filled with farmer's plight, dark face of government politics and image of a shattering society caged with false anticipations.

One would say there is nothing left to say when it comes to such a concept this book is based upon. And they might be right. Shouldn't one read Premchand instead? And one might be wrong. People like us, belonging to a foremost middle class group either believes that things are getting better - `Hey there is a new chain of XYZ brand in the city.' or `It rained good this year.' Or, we believe things are getting worse - `What petrol prices hiked again!' or `Are you kidding me, no subsidy on LPG?' But the fact is things have always been the same for the farmers of this nation. Government, politicians, society and corrupted professionals, everyone constitute for it. And maybe they will be this bad for a long time, unless a struggle begins, one such portrayed in this novel.
But that's not all what the author has to offer. She has also taken into account of politician's thinking. Something, I don't remember I witnessed anywhere else; and hence an applauding effort.

Writing is refreshing and next to perfect. It feels good to learn that you are investing your time in such a book whose author has done a tremendous research. The confidence, anger and urges are conveniently conveyed with moderate flow, quite appropriate for such a story. No, it's not a drag.
The only bad part I came across is that many-a-times I felt the dialogue between characters as superficial. Reminds you of something you may have heard somewhere. Also, it makes the characters to lose a bit of credibility.

Overall, this is a fresh read which you begin with a sigh of relief that it's not going to be in the junk shelf of your library and complete with lots of thoughts and emotions storming through your brain. Recommended for every reader who need food for thoughts, particularly those who can't miss a day's newspaper.

Mindblowingly amazing book for first-timers to web development using Java
By Amazon Customer
I've taken a few intro to web development using Java courses. I have even taken some Spring courses. No one was able to explain basic concepts of JSPs, servlets, controllers, beans, and server engines as well as Mr. Downey.

Despite having taken courses for this material, I was still lost trying to plug my way through all the different parts that make up a web project. This book clarified absolutely everything. I went from spending a whole week trying to debug a problem to what is now an hour or two max of troubleshooting. I went from being completely miserable and pissed at my job to having a blast of a good time.

I've actually also learned more about how Spring works, because now I fully understand all of the concepts that Spring is trying to replace/simplify/rework.

As far as I'm concerned, Tim Downey is a master at imparting knowledge through his writing, diagrams, and examples. All the information is organized and progresses in a logical, common-sense manner. So many other books skip over topics assuming the reader knows all about them, leaving people lost and unable to progress due to missing key pieces of information. With this book, I feel like I am receiving complete knowledge of all the topics.

I cannot recommend this book enough, at least to complete Java noobs trying to learn how to build a web site using Java.

THE Book for beginners
By GeorgyBoy
First, excuse my English. I'm french speaking

Transmitting knowledge is an art that only exprienced teachers can do.
If you are a beginner, this book is for you. What i like the most of this book is the fact that the author is a experienced teacher who is aware of what newbies (like me)need to process new information.
The exercises after each chapters are very useful and that is the second reason why i bought this book (the first reason being the fact that the author is a teacher).

MM: We all met in graduate school in New York City a decade ago! And we’ve stayed friends ever since.

SV: Dude. Was that really ten years ago? Feels like ten minutes.

MM: I know. I didn’t want to believe it either.

JH: In some ways it feels like twenty years ago to me! What I really love is that even though the three of us no longer live in the same city, we still go away on writing retreats together and do book tours together. Our books keep us close.

MM: Jenny organizes the most amazing writing retreats. We all hang out and write and catch up. It’s a yearly highlight.

SV: I feel it’s so important to have friends who understand this weird thing we all do. I can ask Morgan and Jenny anything…from the business side (is this deal point in my contract too aggressive?) to the creative side (where’s a fun place my two characters can make out?).

MM: And it’s so great to have friends you can text when you need story advice, or just to commiserate with someone who understands the process. It makes what can be a pretty solitary job feel a lot less so. Also, Jenny is a genius book-title-er.

Do the three of you have similar or different creative styles? Do you approach writing your books in a similar way?

JH: We have really different creative styles. I write a first draft almost like a series of vignettes, never in order. It's very spare. I figure out the shape of the book as I piece it all together.

SV: I think Morgan’s a lot like me, because she also has a background in screenplay writing, and we enjoy thinking about structure, all the narrative places a story could potentially go.

MM: It’s true! And as for my process, I can’t write out of order—I need to write in a linear fashion, straight through to the end. And I don’t really have an outline. I have a vague idea of where I want to go, but that’s it. I like getting some surprises along the way.

SV: Same here. I feel like Jenny intimately knows her characters from the first page, whereas I have to put them on a journey and make them do stuff in order to discover who they are.

Which characters from your respective books do you feel would be friends with each other? Who would get along the best? Would any of your characters have crushes on each other?

SV: I’ll say that John McClaren from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Levi Hamrick from The Last Boy and Girl in the World would be friends. They both have a quiet nerdy confidence about them.

MM: I think Andie from The Unexpected Everything would definitely have a crush on Jesse Ford from The Last Boy and Girl!

SV: I was thinking that also, but I don’t think Andie and Taylor from the Summer series could be friends IRL. Andie is like a dressage show horse and Taylor is like a wild pony.

JH: Natalie from Not That Kind of Girl would be friends with Margot from To All The Boys I've Loved Before. They're both driven, high-achieving girls with bright futures.

MM: Emily from Since You’ve Been Gone would totally be friends with Lara Jean from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and P.S. I Still Love You. I think they have similar personality types! I can see them hanging out at home together and cooking.

JH: I can also see Lara Jean having a crush on Roger from Amy & Roger's Epic Detour because—mix tapes!

MM: Lara Jean would introduce him to doo-wop girl groups and Roger’s life would never be the same.

What’s the one piece of advice you would like to give aspiring writers that you wish you had when you first started out?

JH: I would tell them not to be in a rush. Because, yes, it is absolutely amazing to be able to write for a living, but there is also something truly wonderful about writing just for you, just because you have to, because you can't not.

MM: Read a lot, and write a lot. Don’t expect to be a perfect writer on the first try—writing is a skill, and just like any other skill, you get better at it the more you do it!

SV: Find friends who will support you, who understand your work, and who know how to get the best writing out of you. You don’t have to do it alone! That’s what keeps the three of us together.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Andie Walker had planned to spend her summer in the Young Scholars Program at Johns Hopkins with other aspiring doctors. Unfortunately, when her politician father gets caught up in a minor financial scandal, the campaign contributor who recommended her for the program pulls his support and Andie is left facing a long summer at home in Connecticut. All of the internships and summer jobs that could have helped bolster her college applications have long since been filled, so Andie takes a job walking dogs to fill her days while her friends give tours at the local museum and manage community theater productions. Andie and her dad haven't spent much time together since her artist mother's death, and navigating their new day-to-day routine is difficult for both of them. And though the teen has long had an ironclad rule about keeping relationships with guys under three weeks, cute, awkward Clark has her rethinking it. The most interesting things tend to happen when plans are upended, and Andie's story is no exception. Though the outcomes will hold few surprises for most readers, it's a genuine pleasure to watch Andie explore her relationships with her father, her friends, and Clark (especially once his delightful secret is revealed) and to see her channel her smarts and ambition into new career goals. VERDICT Recommended for libraries where light realistic fiction is popular.—Stephanie Klose, Library Journal

"Fans will enjoy sinking into this immersive summer read." (Publisher's Weekly February 8, 2016)

How nice it is to also find a book that steers clear of clichéd girl drama in favor of portraying long-standing and supportive friendships. A novel best read on a lazy summer day with sand between the toes." (Kirkus Reviews March 1, 2016)

Another Morgan Matson Gem!
By Andi S.
What can I say about Morgan Matson's books that I haven't said before? I was destroyed by Second Chance Summer, enthralled by Since You've Been Gone, and wooed by Amy and Roger's Epic Detour. She's written herself so high in my list of author's I love that I don't think she can get any higher. And then she gives me The Unexpected Everything which made me feel the things I felt in the first 3 books she has written and changes my expectations again. I mean can she do anything wrong? This book was just fantastic.

The Unexpected Everything is the story of Andie, the daughter of a congressman that is currently being investigated. Andie has always had a plan. It was the easiest way to live life. If she knew what was coming she didn't have to figure out what to do. But this summer is anything but typical for Andie. Instead of her plan she finds herself spending the summer in a way she never expected and maybe learning life is sometimes better lived when you don't know what's coming.

This book put me through a gamut of emotions. I laughed and smiled and cringed and cried. I was angry and upset and excited. I felt everything that was happening much like Andie did. I felt like I was part of Andie's journey and I loved that. Because really that is what The Unexpected Everything was about, Andie's journey. She was so certain she could plan and schedule things but life isn't like that and she needed the summer she had to prove that to herself. She needed everything that happened with her friends to happen. She needed to have real conversations with people. She needed to see that life happens when you are waiting on plans unless you do something and live it. And she really needed Clark.

Clark, Clark, Clark. Nerdy and adorable and sweet and unsure. He is everything that is right about swoony book boys and he was the perfect counterpart for Andie. They were complete opposites but there was something magical about them together. And awkward. Man were they awkward at times. Eh, it just made them more endearing. But seriously Clark really helped Andie in her summer of the unknown by actually being part of the unknown. I just loved him. Oh and Andie's friends. They were such a great unit. They too were real and some of their story arcs just broke my heart (I'm looking at you Morgan. Making me cry at jury duty!).

I don't want to give too much away and take anything from this masterpiece. It was really just perfect. From the characters to a familiar location (!!!!!!!) to some familiar mentions (!!!!!) there wasn't anything I didn't love about this story and Andie's growth. All I can say is if you are new to Morgan Matson, start at the beginning and read them all. If you are a Morgan fan...you are in for a reading treat.

Get ready for a plethora of good feels and a warm heart while reading
By Aila Jiang
If you know me, you know that I’m not the biggest fan of contemporaries. They’re cute and light and fluffy but sometimes I can just get so exasperated with the characters and drama one way or another. But this book? Wow, uh, it really brought out a lot of emotions. The Unexpected Everything made me smile so wide my cheeks hurt, giggle like someone was tickling me, and brought tears to my eyes. I just fell completely in love with the characters and all their antics. Also, yay for the Since You’ve Been Gone cameos!

I think the thing that hit closest to home is Andie’s relationship with her father, who is a big shot politician. In the beginning of the book, he’s taking a break from his campaign and we can tell that he’s not a big aspect of Andie’s life. They’re not close, even though she’s always watching what she does so no consequences will befall his political career. I mean, the girl’s heading for a summer program at John Hopkin’s even. Well, those plans fall through and she finds herself, from the unlikeliest of events: dog-walking.

The beginning of this book was a little slow as we get to know Andie’s world, including her friends: Bri, Toby, and Palmer as well as the other characters that shape her life. I really can’t get over how realistic their friendship is, and how reminiscent they are of my own life. There’s definitely a butt load of good times, and there are also not-so-good times. We find that people change, and others just drift even though a group has been together for years. And honestly, that’s something that happened not recently to a group of friends in my own circle of acquaintances. I laughed with them, my heart ached for them in all the best ways, and these characters will definitely stick with me for quite a while.

As Andie’s father takes a break from his job, they also become closer. And wow, reading about them really pulled at my heartstrings. In the beginning they’re really awkward with each other, but they slowly discover things about each other that they never knew before. All it takes is the time to talk it out sometimes, you know?

“You have to take your chances. Go and attempt and see what happens. And even if you fail – especially if you fail – come back with your experience and your hard-won knowledge and a story you can tell.”

The romance just filled my heart so much. Clark’s character is really interesting and he’s just so awkward and adorable and ERGH I want one in my own life. He’s extremely compatible with Andie, and they just strengthen each other. It’s also interesting to read about his own struggles as a famous writer in the story. Let’s just say that their relationship gave me all the feels and you’ll have to read the book to fully experience it.

Overall, all this contributed to the growth of Andie’s character. I loved reading about the changes happening to her and comparing her actions in the beginning of the book to those in the end. I mean, I liked her character from the beginning, with her controlling Type-A personality and drive to accomplish things. Throughout the story though, she realizes that sometimes you don’t need a plan to get to the final point.

“So have adventures. Go exploring. Drive around at midnight. Feel the wind running through your hair. Life is so short, my darling, And there’s no day like today.”

Reading this book was like the first bite of sherbet ice cream in the middle of summer – it’s packed with flavor and provides a delicious and refreshing story in the midst of an idle season. The moment I finished reading the last sentence (well, after several times of rereading it to savor the words), I went to preorder it. I recommend this book to all readers, no matter what type of genre you prefer, and can only hope that it touches your heart the way it did mine.

I love Morgan Matson!
By Melissa's Rambling
This book is so good and it made me cry. Okay, I know, I always say that, but I always cry in books whether it's happy or sad.

You have Andie who's father is a politician and they haven't really spent time together in about 5 years. Andie's mom isn't around but you can read about that in the book. I love Andie's friends. Palmer, Toby and Bri are all best friends with Andie and yes those are girls. :-) They have Tom and Wyatt as the guy friends.

Andie has it all planned out for the summer. She's going to the Young Scholars Program at John Hopkins, but there is a big scandal with her father and she gets turned down. I mean seriously, this had nothing to do with Andie and it isn't fair but that's life. And her father wasn't guilty either but it is what it is right?

Now Andie has no idea what she's going to do, but her friends are happy she's going to be with them over the summer. Andie decides to at least apply for a job and this happens to be in the form of a dog walker :-) Yes, doggers! I love it!

One of the dogs she walks is Bertie the Great Pyrenees. She actually meets Bertie and his caretaker, Clark Bruce McCallister, when Bertie got away from him and sort of had a run in with Andie. She wasn't a dog walker at the time, but when Clark found out she had a job walking dogs she hired the company she was working through.

At first Andie is really down that she had to stay home for the summer, but it turns out to be the best summer EVER! Her dad is home now and they got off to a bad start but then it ended up really great for them. I was so happy for them in the book. Andie has a great time with her friends. AND.... there is always the AND... she finds love with wonderful Clark. I love Clark. He's a teenage fantasy writer (yeah teenage writer!) and he's dreamy.

Watching Andie and Clark slowly get together was so sweet.

Concrete and Culture: A Material History, by Adrian Forty

Concrete has been used in arches, vaults, and domes dating as far back as the Roman Empire. Today, it is everywhere—in our roads, bridges, sidewalks, walls, and architecture. For each person on the planet, nearly three tons of concrete are produced every year. Used almost universally in modern construction, concrete has become a polarizing material that provokes intense loathing in some and fervent passion in others.
Focusing on concrete’s effects on culture rather than its technical properties, Concrete and Culture examines the ways concrete has changed our understanding of nature, of time, and even of material. Adrian Forty concentrates not only on architects’ responses to concrete, but also takes into account the role concrete has played in politics, literature, cinema, labor-relations, and arguments about sustainability. Covering Europe, North and South America, and the Far East, Forty examines the degree that concrete has been responsible for modernist uniformity and the debates engendered by it. The first book to reflect on the global consequences of concrete, Concrete and Culture offers a new way to look at our environment over the past century.

Review
“This book fully succeeds in portraying the most emblematic material of modern culture. Concrete is seemingly condemned to transformations, easily slipping into the role of timber or stone, with no clear identity of its own. With his engaging scholarship, Adrian Forty takes us beyond the merely concrete, showing a material that does not fit into pre-cast categories, as a projection screen of Japanese, Brazilian or Swiss identities, of fears and pleasures, a source of dislike and fascination since its invention.” (kos Moravnszky, ETH Zurich)

“This erudite, insightful and wide-ranging study takes the field of material history in new directions. By focusing on concrete—the ubiquitous marker of modernity—we are taken through a labyrinth of intersecting cultural and political developments that range across architecture, cinema, photography, planning, and a host of other fields.” (Matthew Gandy, University College London)

“Forty offers a historical account of how concrete has played a part in humans’ relationship to their physical surroundings and the global consequences. By taking into account the role concrete has played in areas like politics, literature, cinema, and sustainability, he gives readers a new viewpoint about this material.” (Choice)

“Forty admits that he initially saw Concrete and Culture as an ‘entertainment’, an enjoyable project that allowed him to travel globally, but that he ended up grappling with a set of problems that were both intellectually difficult and full of rich cultural associations. Taking on a topic that has for the most part—until very recently—been the subject of technical literature, he again shows us a new way of looking at modernity, via one of its most characteristic material manifestations."

Enjoyable read and a must if you like the supernatural or anything Scottish
By C. G. Herbertson
Nominated for awards, crammed full of award winning authors, the Terror Tales series, edited by Paul Finch and published by Gray Friar Press, is now on its eighth volume: TERROR TALES OF THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS. Happily I’m in it along with several other Scottish authors whose work I enjoy and admire. The “Terror Tales” series is rapidly spanning the British Isles in disseminating horror and ghostliness in a broth of old and new tales based on the folklore of the region. Paul Finch puts wafers of legend, horrific happenings and terrifying tales in between the short stories, which are a times even more compelling than some of the stories themselves. The series even threatens to go beyond the isles, which is great news for lovers of the supernatural , the occult and those who like their bedtime reading inspirationally morbid.

Ian Hunter kicks of with “Skye’s Skary Places” an excellent piece about the isle of Skye and a man’s increasingly tenuous relationship with his partner. Helen Grant’s “The Dove” continues the high standard set as it explores that awful moment under the shadow of the gallows. “Strone House” by Barbara Roden is a personal favourite. I’ve always had a penchant for the surreal aspects of automata; a nice story with its unexpected contrast: a mechanical world not generally associated with the grandeur of the highlands. “Face Down in the Earth” by Tom Johnstone is a personal reminder that Highlanders have very very long memories. “The Dreaming God Is Singing Where She Lies” by William Meikle is also excellently placed with it’s one fault being that I would have liked another five pages of it.

Rosie Seymour’s “The Housekeeper” has echoes of Pan Horror with a spicing of class. It’s very short but for this kind of story, short is exactly right. “The Executioner” by Peter Bell reads at times like a climbing manual and in another author might have fallen flat on its face. In Bell’s hands it becomes, for me at least, a form of poetry. An excellent story and perhaps my favourite in the anthology. “You Must Be Cold” by John Whitbourn is an intelligent and well crafted piece – not my preferred style of writing (too many brackets) but it’s a subtle, unexpected and unusual tale. I haven’t seen one like it before.

Sheila Hodgson’s “The Fellow Travellers” began very well and continued for about two thirds of the story to be absolutely compelling. Maybe I am just simple minded but beyond that there seemed to be a proliferation of unnecessary characters. Might have to reread it to get the full flavour. “Shelleycoat” by Graeme Hurry was a decent short, good concept and interesting ending. “The Other House, the Other Voice” by yours truly deals with Crowley. You’ll have to judge that one for yourself

“Myself / Thyself” by D.P. Watt comes quite close to being a classic and I can imagine it being reprinted. “Broken Spectres” by Carl Barker was conceptually very good and well written but didn’t quite grab me; probably sounds silly in the context of the supernatural but it may have lacked a certain necessary plausibility – despite that misgiving, it was very good.

Gary Fry’s “Jack Knife” as one might expect, is expertly written, enjoyable and leaves the reader with that oozy feeling of worse to come. Johnny Mains, no stranger to the world of Horror as an editor, has been quietly honing his other skills as a writer. “The Foul Mass at Tongue House” is a fine example of his development: an enjoyable tale.

“There You’ll Be” by Carole Johnstone was a strange beast for me – an almost perfectly written plotted and paced tale which unfortunately did not hit the eerie button – maybe I’m just a darker soul.

Finally, wouldn’t be right not to mention Paul Finch. I don’t read much short fiction now as I prefer drier stuff. The highlight of the series is undoubtedly the snippets of legends and folklore which really ice the supernatural cake. The series is indubitably at the top end of the market and is frankly a must buy if you like that kind of thing.

Terrific terror tales of the scottish highlands
By Matthew Cash
I don't know what I enjoyed more, the eerie folktales and legends or the stories interweaving them.
Some truly superbly creepy stories here, in some ways it reminds me of all the old regional ghost books my mother would buy on her travels. I loved reading about all the mysteries and legends and how the stories fitted in and held their own.
I am definitely going to buy more of these books.

“Always fresh, romantic, inventive, and hilarious.”
—New York Times bestselling author Susan Wiggs

Speaking of New York Times and USA Today bestseller Sandra Hill, Romantic Times BOOKclub declares that, “humor and Hill are a winning team.” Whether she’s entangling handsome Viking warriors in outrageously hot and funny romantic adventures—in the distant past or, remarkably, in the modern day—or creating contemporary love stories as hilarious as they are scorchingly hot, Hill is a master. In her marvelously hysterical The Love Potion, she updates (sort of) William Shakespeare’s classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream, when a sexy scientist inadvertently casts a love spell on the last man she’d ever want to fall in love with.

Review
"Sandra Hill always tells a delightfully humorous story with a unique twist. Once again, she uses that well-tested formula to create THE LOVE POTION. Readers will chuckle as they get caught up in the romantic sparring and all the madcap adventures. Then the chemistry between Lucien and Sylvie turns erotic, and their talk about his reaction to the love potion becomes show and tell! THE LOVE POTION is definitely a read-again book, just to make sure you didn't miss anything. It's a hoot!" -- Vicki Patterson for BOOKBUG ON THE WEB

"THE LOVE POTION combines the steamy Cajun atmosphere of `The Big Easy' with the humor of a screwball comedy... (It) is a terrific read..." -- Susan Duncan for THE ROMANCE READER

"The hilarious, fun-loving, steamy, breathtaking tale of passion between a `Bad Boy of the Bayou" and an extremely shy, aristocratic Creole chemist is sure to be another bestseller for Ms. Hill. This is one book that any one who has read Sandra Hill in the past will not want to miss. Also, if you have never read a Sandra Hill book, this delightful book would be a good jumping off point." -- Lori Bradley for BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE:

"The very talented Sandra Hill adds to her already impressive list of reading gems with this delightfully funny and sexy tale." -- Jill Smith for ROMANTIC TIMES

From the Back Cover

Fame and fortune are surely only a swallow awaywhen Dr. Sylvie Fontaine discovers a chemicalformula guaranteed to attract the opposite sex.Though her own love life is purely hypothetical, the shy chemist's professional future is assured . . .as soon as she can find a human guinea pig.

The only problem is the wrong man has swallowedSylvie's love potion. Bad boy Lucien LeDeux ismore than she can handle even before he's dosedwith the Jelly Bean Fix. The wildly virile lawyeris the last person she'd choose to subject tothe scientific method.

When the dust settles, Sylvie and Luc have theanswers to some burning questions: Can a mandie of testosterone overload? Can a straightlacedfemale lose every single one of her inhibitions? And they learn that old-fashioned romanceis still the best catalyst for love.

Hilarious and Sexy
By Tina Engler
Dr. Silvie Fontaine and bad boy attorney Lucien LeDeux have never gotten along. They've had bad blood between them since childhood. But they've also carried an attraction for the other that neither of them will acknowledge aloud. Enter into the equation "the jelly bean fix"--a new drug Silvie is working on that has the physical implications of Viagra, while simultaneously stimulating the emotions of the subject--and you have the jist of this novel.
This is Hill at her wittiest and sexiest. The dialogue was hilarious, the relationship between the hero and heroine was intriguing, and the plot threw enough twists and turns to keep my attention. This is the perfect lighthearted, romantic comedy to read if you need a little pick-me-up.

A Great Way to Spend the Weekend!
By Kristi Ahlers
I loved this book. I don't think I have laughed so much while reading a book in a while. Luc and Sylvie are great! Sylvie has created a love potion that is taken in the form of a jelly bean. It has not yet been tested on humans only on her furry companions Sampson and Delhila and it has been very very sucessfull with them. They can't keep their paws off each other. Luc is a dark, sexy cajun, lawyer who is known as "the swamp lawyer" has to ask Sylvie a favor. He would rather die then have to do that! While he is busy tormenting and teasing her he eats one of her special jelly beans. What happens when two people who despise (not!) each other are now drawn to each other? Why they help to keep the Louisiana bayou all the steamier of course! Throw in some danger from those that feel Sylvie is messing with Voodoo, Luc's 78 year old aunt with purple hair who rides a Harley and knits things for Luc's hopechest, two horney rats in a Happy Meal box, and you have the makings of a great weekend read!

Fantastic read.....
By Elizabeth Benway
This is the first book I have read of Ms Hill's and if this story is any indication of what she is capable of, then I have to say I have been missing out on some fantastic books. I am truly hooked on this author now and I am going to dig her other books out and read them as soon as possible. Lucien LeDeux has been labeled 'bad boy of the bayou' since childhood and for good reason, as he has made the label a self-fulfilling prophecy with his audacious teasing of the Creole-born Sylvie Fontaine. He issues a threat to her at a school dance when they were both thirteen, that they would one day slow dance in the nude. Now twenty years later, he still feels a strong urge to shock and dismay her. Luc is a lawyer and his brother's dilemma demands that he seek Sylvie's expertise as a chemist to test contaminated bayou water for oil spillage from his father's company. Upon his arrival in her lab, he encounters her in the midst of a secret experiment and as always he 'rattles her cage' and in the chaos he unintentionally eats her jelly beans that is loaded with a love potion that she has invented. She was on the verge of testing it on a human subject and is freaked out when her childhood nemesis gulps down the potion that she knows will make him sexually hungry for her. At this point is when the fun begins! I absolutely loved this story! It is outrageously funny and the romance is wonderful. Not only was the story of the hero and heroine great but the secondary characters were enjoyable as well, from Luc's lovable little aunt Tante Lulu to Samson and Delilah, Sylvie's 'in love lab rats', this story held my interest from the first to the last page. This book is a romance reader's dream!

My kid was super disappointed.
By Demeter S.
Don't waist your money! This was full of fluff and junk that had nothing to do with the show. Obviously someone was just trying to cash in on the show's popularity. My kid was super disappointed.

Not Relevant to Gravity Falls
By Big Bill
Bought this for my daughter who is a big fan of Gravity Falls, but this was a big disappointment. She said it was a collection of random stuff that mostly had nothing to do with Gravity Falls. Even if it was a little bit relevant we would have kept it. We ended up returning it.

Kids who like Gravity Falls will be disappointed
By kerrie bradshaw
Unfortunately, I had to return this book. It is not suitable for your typical Gravity Falls fan. Thought it would contain facts & trivia, instead listed items like what shows are aired on Disney channel in foreign countries. Too bad, was really excited when I found it.

Never Trust a Chained Captive.

That was one of the rules David Parker Ray posted on the isolated property where he and his girlfriend Cynthia Hendy lived near New Mexico's Elephant Butte Lake. They called their windowless trailer The Toybox. Over the years they lured countless young women into its chamber of unspeakable pain and horror--and filmed every moment.

A Satanist, Ray was the center of a web of sadism, sex slavery, and murder. Authorities suspect he murdered more than 60 women. In October 2011, a flood of tips led to a renewed search for the remains of more possible victims. This updated edition reveals all the details, plus the inside story on the controversial movie based on these unforgettable events.

"An eye-opening journey into the world of criminal sexual sadism." --Jim Yontz, Deputy District Attorney, Albuquerque, New Mexico

16 pages of haunting photos

"Darkly fascinating. . .a shocker from beginning to end." --Gregg Olsen, New York Times bestselling author
