Abstract, meandering, out of touch

This book is light on both theory and gaming. There are plenty of references TO theory, and Wark has the nebulously elliptical "the-form-is-the-content" style down pretty pat, but being an avid gamer of 20+ years and a working background in English theory did not prepare me for this book. I'm not sure what would, really. It's not really worth anyone's time to go into the book in-depth, but here are the most puzzling/frustrating aspects of the book:

Wark speaks of a "military entertainment complex" behind the ever expanding reach of video gaming in mainstream culture. He either actually believes this, or uses this phrase in the casually aloof post-structuralist fashion of (I assume) his idols. While the US Army has put out a few games in the last decade, conflating the "military industrial complex" with the video game industry (and its concurrent effect on pop culture) is laziness bordering on absurdity.

Sentences such as: "If history is an endless list of things that should not have happened, boredom is what refuses not to happen," "What the game highlights is a logistics of targeting, an economy of order against time--the battle of alternating between merger with, and separation from, the other," and "The realm of the not-game is the domain in which the gamer cannot act as a gamer."

There are plenty of charts and "illustrations" Wark cobbles together to make his point clearer. These aren't to be missed.

If you're interested in theory and how it can appear to sound as though it applies to a topic, read this book. If you're interested in video games and/or constructive uses of theory, don't.

Ludic and Lucid

I picked this book up through a series of highly fortunate events, and have not regretted in the least the purchase. I agree in part with another reviewer who said that you have to read the book at least twice to understand it: That is not a down side to the book at all.

Wark's understanding of what gaming can and should be is wonderfully expressed. The ideas are complex, accessible, and continuously thought-provoking. I shared excerpts and themes from it to my high school video game class, and though they didn't catch everything, they understood a lot. I wish there were more than just five stars I could give to this book.

It should be noted, however, that there is definitely a lot of theory in this book (which makes sense, given the title). It requires thought to go along with it--just like any good game.

Warning: a little bit biased in favor of artists, since the writer did represent artists before writing the book. However, this bias does not cloak over the great legal scholarship.

Scrumptious!

I have read her cookbooks and I have seen her act in movies. Both, I might add, have been virtuoso performances.

I bought this book for I was born in Delhi, India, around the time (give or take 10 years)that Ms. Jaffrey writes about.

It is delightful.

Not only the narrative, simple, unassuming but wonderfully evocative, but what she manages to put in between family reminiscences. All those wonderful food items and she describes them with mouthwatering adjectives.

Very enjoyble indeed.

I wish they'll bring out an audio edition, this is worth listening to and drool in a long car journey

Wonderful Evocative Journey Through India's Past

My son bought me this lovely book for my birthday, and as always, the writing is seductive, and draws one in immediately. Jaffrey has a delightfully chatty and confidential tone when talking about family and friends, and it makes you feel you know them well. This is a fascinating book - well written, and one that lingers in the memory like a fragment of a dream: familiar, elusive, and haunting. My only complaint is that it wasn't longer, and didn't go much past early adulthood. I want to know more, and hopefully this talented actress, author, and raconteur will do just that. This is my 6th book by Madhur Jaffrey, and I am fond of them all. I recommend any and all to people willing to try something new. A personal favorite is Flavors Of India. Lots of great recipes and anecdotal information on the people and regions of India. If you are new to Indian cooking, you are in for a rare treat with her many cookery books. They do take some time and preparation, but if you can read, and are moderately adventurous, all will be well. Let me also recommend Indian CDs and Bollywood for the full experience. Bon voyage.

A brilliant and delicious memoir

I have always loved Madhur Jaffrey's recipes and acting. This memoir, even for those who don't know her, is marvelous. She provides a beautifully-written glimpse of growing up in a large and well-to-do Indian family that mixed Muslim and Hindu traditions in an era that is now past. The description of family foods (and the recipes -- YUM)and the traditions of her family are wonderful. I was terribly sorry when I came to the end of the book, though I was thrilled to find recipes in the back. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in Indian food, Indian culture, or history -- and to anyone who just plain enjoys memoirs.

About the Author
Zelda Fitzgerald was born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1900. She became a 'roarer' of the pre-1920s and met F.Scott Fitzgerald at one of the many social dances she attended. They married in 1920 and began a decade of riotous living in France and America. Zelda wrote magazine articles and short stories, and at twenty-seven became obsessed with a career as a dancer. The couple became increasingly eccentric and erratic; Scott became an alcoholic and Zelda developed schizophrenia. In 1932 Zelda became seriously ill and wrote Save me the Waltz in six weeks to the envy of her husband who had been writing Tender is the Night for more than five years. Zelda died in a hospital fire in 1947.

Such an underrated novel

This is a very beautiful book. Written in several weeks while in a hospital, it retells Mrs. Fitzgerald's life in very vivid colors - although it is a novel, not an autobiography. The character's name is Alabama Beggs. We go from her remarkable childhood and youth in the south, to her marriage to the artist David, her unrequited love affair with a French aviator, to the unbelievably brilliant passages as a struggling ballet dancer with the Russian Ballet (Madame Egorova being her teacher) when it had relocated to Paris after the Revolution. Her descriptions of her enchanting childhood and popularity as a belle during WWI, the amazing chapters working with the impoverished Russian and French ballet dancers are high literature indeed! She is a master of description whether describing flowers, fauna, her husband's beautiful physical attributes, her sister's tragically ill-fated romances or her warm-hearted mother and besieged and stern father. For all fans of the Fitzgeralds, it is an enchanting read! A famous actress once said to me (she knew the Fitzgeralds) when I asked her about "Save Me the Waltz" she replied: "But my dear, it is my bible!"

Wins Out Over Husband's 'Tender is the Night'

This uneven but fascinating book is the last great thing Zelda did before losing her spirit completely under "treatment" in a NC mental hospital.

Because he wrote it as an answer to Waltz, I immediately read F Scott's Tender is the Night (a creepy whitewash of the very sinister suppression of Zelda's spirit and Scott's many flings). But Waltz would be best read alongside any of the biographical books about Zelda Fitzgerald (see Milford, Cline, Wagner-Martin). As a time capsule, it's invaluable. Utterly fascinating to discover slang that disappeared, slang that endured. What passed as the zenith of witty repartee in the jazz age comes off today as just so much drunken verbal oneupmanship by phony snobs. I winced. Often.

But in this book, she captures a real physical joy of being beautiful and popular, a giddy tingle of fame and fortune, the reckless confidence of affluence and privilege. Call it a real taste of the roaring twenties, but there are plenty of wealthy drunks living this sort of high life today. It just seems more charming when we think of it as the history of the lost generation.

No matter time or location, reader is at just one degree of separation from the life of the most charming American couple in Paris in those days. I loved reading the atmospheric sections on wild parties that lasted for days on end (far more intense than F Scott's own Tender). And Zelda's accounts of the bitter struggles of ballet dancers were an eye opener for me.

But the book is not the work of a polished writer. There's no sense of pace, and we glean more from context than anything else. Love affairs (revealed by biographers) are agonizingly glossed over (probably due to her husband acting as initial editor), her toddling daughter is annoyingly precocious and articulate, and the endless similes drove this reader up the wall. Flower fetishists will no doubt achieve states of ecstasy reading sections of this book, those a total bore for anyone else.

Perhaps with more practice, Zelda could have become so much more than the beautiful ornament of her husband, the big handsome literary star. There's evidence of talent in Waltz, and the fact that she could crank it out in 2 months' time... well, she had the drive and determination to shine.
