A father cleans up after his toddler and imagines a cup that won't spill. An engineer watches people using walkie-talkies and has an idea. A doctor figures out how to deliver patients to the operating room before they die. By studying inventions like these-the sippy cup, the cell phone, and an ingenious hospital bed-we can learn how people imagine their way around "impossible" problems to discover groundbreaking answers. Pagan Kennedy reports on how these enduring methods can be adapted to the twenty-first century, as millions of us deploy tools like crowdfunding, big data, and 3D printing to find hidden opportunities. Inventology uses the stories of inventors and surprising research to reveal the steps that produce innovation. As Kennedy argues, recent advances in technology and communication have placed us at the cusp of a golden age; it's now more possible than ever before to transform ideas into actuality. Inventology is a must-listen for designers, artists, makers, and anyone else who is curious about creativity. By identifying the steps of the invention process, Kennedy reveals the imaginative tools required to solve our most challenging problems.

Where do great ideas come from, and how do they result in brilliant inventions?
By ZenWoman
Art Fry, the inventor of the Post-it, said that invention is what happens when you translate a thought to a thing. It involves creating a prototype that lets you test your concept. Innovation is what happens afterwards as you work through obstacles to turn your idea into business.
Pagan Kennedy sets up the book with this quote and then proceeds to discover the answer to how invention comes out or as she calls it "Inventology" - the study of inventions. She takes us through the Who, How, What, and the Benefits of inventions in the subsequent chapters. We learn that necessity is really the mother of invention in many cases as people try to find solutions to every day drudgery and repetitive tasks. Tennis ball baskets, machine automation, rollaboard suitcases and more was a result of every day tedium.
Pagan Kennedy studies several such breakthroughs in the chapters of this book from the physical to digital and social. She gives us many examples of how these inventors went about creating their products or discoveries. This is a fascinating book about invention with many insights about the circumstances, the process, the inventors and the challenges.
The only criticism I have is that the book mainly covers highly educated inventors and the problems of the developed world. Lately, some amazing innovation and inventions have come from countries with greater lower income populations, invented by people who may have had very basic education, and their invention was necessitated by the absence of resources. Products like the empty Coke bottle light bulb that used daylight to provide lights in little village homes came from Brazil, the clay refrigerator that helps keep foods cold in villages without electricity comes from India as well as a cheaper sanitary napkin for rural women. The clean cook stove, products for getting cleaner water or reducing infant mortality have all been invented to assist those who live in poverty, and some have saved millions of lives. I would have loved to learn more about how some of these came about as they have an additional constraint of having to be extremely low cost.
Recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand the process of invention and the creativity that surrounds it.

Pagan Kennedy's book will challenge and stimulate your thinking and creativity!
By AngeliqueA
What a delightful and informative book! I don't know this author, but after reading "Inventology" I'm going to look up her other works. She is a creative thinker and an innovative researcher. I learned so much and only occasionally came across information I've already read elsewhere. As a retired person who reads a lot I sometimes feel like there is a book mill that gobbles existing books and regurgitates them in new form so that the best seller phenom can continue unabated, not unlike the equivalent phenomenon in movie-making in which one sequel follows another follows another. So, the freshness of Pagan Kennedy's research, writing, and general attitude is much-needed and most welcomed by me! As the author says in her Introduction, she has "set out to answer four questions: 1. Who really invents? 2. How do they do it? 3. What can the rest of us learn from the data on successful invention? 4. How will twenty-first-century invention be transformed by crowdfunding, 3-D printing, big data, and other new technologies?" The book is divided into five parts: Problem Finding, Discovery, Prophecy, Connecting, and Empowerment. The character sketches are fascinating. The anecdotes are informative. The overall approach is exciting, invigorating, and iconoclastic. My thinking was terrifically challenged in very welcome ways. I highly recommend this excellent book.

Fascinating account of how technology progresses
By Phelps Gates
An excellent read! It gives the stories behind many of the inventions that have changed the way we live today. The author has certainly done her homework, interviewing a large number of people who have made these contributions, and trying (with a good deal of success) to figure out exactly what it was that made it possible for them to do this. The author wrote a column for the New York Times (as the "innovation columnist"), and at least some of the material here is derived from work she did for that column, but most of it was new to me.
Perhaps the best part of the book is the section which discusses how certain corporate or academic environments stimulate (or discourage) inventions. This needs to be read by executives in every technologically-oriented company (actually, every company). If the book has a fault, it's that it concentrates on patentable devices, rather than the sort of "hints and tips" which would also qualify as a type of invention. In my own experience as a backpacker, I keep running across these (such as the easy way to pick up your pack, or a clever strategy for storing sleeping gear), and these "inventions" turn out to be triggered by much the same sort of things that lead to the inventions discussed in the book. Well worth reading!
