This book presents unique and effective practical methods for invoking angels into a crystal ball and evoking spirits to visible appearance in a dark mirror. It is the companion book to "The Magick of Solomon" video produced by the same author. The techniques taught in this system are hypnotic and subjective. No special psychic talents are required to master this system. The author guides the reader step-by-step to proficiency in the ancient art of Magick.

Review
. . . What makes this (book) remarkable is that the theoretical part (the first half) is easy to read and understand (more or less), due partly to Runyon's mastery of his topic and partly to his folksy, down-home style. . . He takes a hugely complex subject and actually makes it interesting and comprehensible. The second half goes on to outline the rituals and describe in detail the 72 spirits of Solomon and illustrate their sigils. . . -- Ed Buryn, author-artist : The William Blake Tarot

It is rare that we see such an explicit, and well-written guidebook for a subject matter that's been secret for thousands of years. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the supernatural. I give it my highest recommendation. -- Geoffrey James, author: Angel Magic and The Enochian Magick of Doctor John Dee

The Book of Solomon's Magick commences with a personal narrative by Runyon of his involvement in magick, including an initiatory near-death experience . . . The bulk of the book, however, is the clearest exposition I have ever seen of the modern meaning of ritual magick, the complex system of spirits invoked, and the practical set-up of a magickal temple. . . -- Robert S. Ellwood, Univ. of S. Calif.

A Thoroughly Useful Book
By EquesNiger
In his introduction, "Poke" states that this text is for those "who have ever yearned to be a wizard or enchantress in the grand old medieval/Renaissance tradition, but were put off by the bric-a-brac of "Victorian Occultism" while finding (themselves) underwhelmed by the current Neo-Pagan and New Age alternatives". While at first glance seemingly a grandiose statement perhaps to appeal to fans of "Harry Potter", "Poke" actually addresses a genuine frustration in the magical community with the near emasculation of magical practice by "airy fairy" notions. Originally published in 1996, around the same time author Tyson chose to address the same issue by stripping magic of its doctrinal trappings to focus on its mechanics and physics, "Poke" focuses on one of the more traditional and ancient classical grimoires predating modern magical convention.

From the start, "Poke" makes it clear that this is his personal interpretation of the Goetic rites, and that there are some departures from the classic material. While there are assumptions and, (clutch one's chest here), even outright alterations and departures from the standard Goetic rites and associations, it's key to recognize that 1) this is what works for "Poke", and that's a key part of the whole trial and error science of magic, and 2) he is quite honest about the fact that he has made these modifications, and explains the reasons behind them to some degree.

From the introduction, "Poke" states that "this system was developed by and for imaginative people who are not natural psychics". Given that there are, truly, so few of us who are, contrary to some of the self-delusional assertions (though all can, of course, be trained - but most aren't willing to make the effort, and most start quite late in life, which makes it harder), the technique presented is invaluable even if you find the actual re-interpretation of the Goetic practice in some way off-putting.

"Poke" either re-discovered, or created from scratch, a magical system whereby one uses black mirrors and a trick of light to "evoke" images of the various Goetic spirits into appearance. Whether or not this was, in fact, the way the operations were originally performed, (and there's a good case to be made they were), "Poke's" approach is certainly effective. Much like David St Claire, Poke takes the shortest route here, focusing on maximum effect, and, while not expressly stated as such, he postulates an approach that will actually develop one's abilities at seership and scrying.

For those who deride this approach as purely imaginary, take heed - "Poke's" system may seem so on the surface, but, as any magician knows, the process is still psychologically potent, and the "barbarous words of power" do indeed put you in touch with these intelligences, though they may not be in physical manifestation (appearance in a mirror through the technique does, in fact, qualify as "evocation to physical appearance"). While his approach may seem cute and adulterated to some hard core types, this is not stuff to be played at under the covers with a flashlight, and not something to do to simply scare yourself on an odd dark and stormy night. "Poke" mentions a time when he, himself, appears to have discounted the systems potency which, while a humorous anecdote, is also a cautionary one.

Finally, there are instructions for creating a very, very nice altar. While intended for use with this particular system, it's genuinely beautiful and evocatory appearance makes it highly appropriate to ritual general use with some modifications.

While I have one frustration with this text, that being the omission of the original assignment of the Shem-ha-mephorash angels prior to re-assignment, this information can be found in the more recent and very exceptional "Goetia of Dr. Rudd" by Skinner, a text everyone working with "Poke's" approach should have anyway.

Excellent Resource
By Teresa
I have a massive collection of all kind of books on evocation, including ancient grimoires and the Goetia. I found this book to have a friendly narrative telling of personal experience and accumilated knowledge through practice of this art. I felt the information provided was very useful and contained practical instruction, up to the point of construction of the altar and the wood circle (which would be a monumental task and will need a skilled lumber cutter to be employed).

Basic altars can be sized and cut out by anyone at Lowes or Home Depot. Poke's altar is a great concept along with his wood circle and would be well worth the time and money to create.

I found the section on the creation of the wax blocks a little hard to follow and felt that he could have provided more illustration and more details. I have other books on the wax pieces for the four quaurters, and they are also a little difficult to conceive.

Overall, this is a very useful text that makes reference to other books that would be handy for the study of evocation and magick.
He also points out that Enochians are not the lovable beings we may imagine them to be, and gives suggestions to combine eastern and western techniques. I completely agree that some of the angelic presences...just because they wear the badge 'angel' or Enochian, are fierce and do not portray a loving kindness, particularly toward human beings. Angels are entities, and sometimes have even been called 'extraterrestials' by various researchers [such as Brad Steiger]. They have never been human and have not lived on the earth, even though God may assign them a duty to see after certain human/earthly affairs.

This is a great book to add to one's collection, and I give it 5 stars for this reason.

the real deal
By silver elves
Carrol Poke Runyon...
dear Magicians,
... has made a genuine contribution to the art of Magical Evocation, a fact he is not shy of pointing out to us. Yet credit should always be given where due and he is definitely due our thanks for the understanding he has brought to us. This book is an invaluable aid to evocational magicians and we particularly love the Master Mandala that comes with it. Our only reservation is that some of the spirit sigils look like they were reproduced from bad photocopies or really mimeo copies and are sometimes a bit blurred (which if you believe the strict traditionalists, could prove fatal) however, one can find clearer versions of these sigils in Waite's "The Book of Ceremonial Magic" (also sometimes titled "The Book of Black Magic and Pacts") as well as other works if one needs to double check. Doesn't hurt to be safe if one is uncertain.
Still this is a great book and a valuable addition to one's magical library.
