Reasonably comprehensive textbook for Active Filters
By M. S. Aitchison
This book is one step up from Don Lancaster's "Active Filter Cookbook" in terms of comprehensive coverage of the topic, but also a step down in that it is less practical and less generally useful (but is still significantly better than most). It is designed to be a university textbook, with plenty of exercises for students, but I guess many courses have abandoned analogue circuits in such detail since 1976 (when this was written) to the extent that it now contains too much detail and requires too much time to read in term time, so its place is probably on the shelf of "must have" reference books for circuit designers such as myself.
Daryanani covers Network Analysis in general, but active filters in particular detail, and remains relevant 35 years after writing because the expectations of what should be covered in a "network Analysis" text have changed a lot since Van Valkenburg's 1955..74 book on the topic, but not a lot since then. Active filter texts have also changed a lot since, for example, Huelsman's "Theory and Design of Active RC Circuits", but not so much since Daryanani's book (and then mostly relating to digital filter techniques, which are best covered in a separate book, such as R. W. Hamming's "Digital Filters", or in manufacturers' datasheets).
The 495 pages (1976 Edition) begin with a reasonably gentle introduction, including passive RLC passive circuits, applies matrix manipulations, Kirchhoff's laws (which the student is expected to already know), and quickly gets into Voltage-Controlled Voltages Sources and the meat of the subject. Simple circuits such as the passive Bridged-T notch filter are covered briefly as examples in the problems sections. The likes of the Sallen and Key band-pass filter (which, by the way, is a completely different circuit to what is described in Don Lancaster's book) is mentioned without the warnings some authors give that it isn't a very good B-P circuit to use, but the brevity (and 495 pages) allow it to cover several circuits the Lancaster book misses, such as the Friend Biquad and the Delyiannis band-pass, and touches on the Steffen all-pass without really going far enough to make it worthwhile. That still leaves plenty of analogue filters untouched by this book, such as all the Wein bandpass filters and most of the two-opamp filters. It doesn't cover practical implications that are important to real-world designers, but it does deliver with theoretical treatment of quite a few filter topologies (although some of the time it seems to be indulging in "name dropping" exercises only). There is no mention of specific "real world" opamps (just limitations like slew-rateand phase shift in general) - which means it is less useful, but the book doesn't go out of date so quickly... except the FORTRAN software examples are a bit dated.
Sadly, some terms like "Single Amplifier Biquad" and "Multiple FeedBack filter" are not mentioned (the MFB is there - in Figure 9.5, but the name - common even around 1976 - is not), and the term "predistortion" is used in a way that not everyone understands it today. Apart from that it covers all the filters it really should, and with better-than average detail often - but certainly not always. No mention of switched-capacitor filters nor any digital filter techniques. All-in-all, a reasonable compromise in giving breadth with depth sacrificed where it can be, assuming the reader already understands the basics (e.g. has digested the Lancaster book). There are certainly worse books on the topic. It isn't a good choice for beginners nor for anyone wanting a quick answer to questions (the indexing and highlighting/classification of filter types is not as good as it should be), but if you read through the whole book carefully you shuold be able to understand the topic.
