best book on observational studies

Many years ago the famous statistician Ronald Aylmer Fisher criticized analyses that linked lung cancer to smoking. He argued that these studies had hidden biases because they were not controlled experiments. He proposed that smokers could be different from non-smokers because of a genetic propensity to desire cigarettes and that this genetic trait could be correlated with a higher incidence of lung cancer. Thus it would be possible to see a higher frequency of lung cancer among smokers because of this genetic trait rather than because the smoking itself causes the cancer. As far-fetched as this argument may seem to us today, it is based on sound statistical principles and points out some of the potential problems that occur with observational studies.
Although randomized control trials are the best way to determine differences in treatment effects, they are not always practical or ethical. It would be wrong to randomly choose subjects and force some of them to smoke.

Getting around issues of bias in observational studies was first addressed by Cochran who published a book on the subject in 1983. Rosenbaum came out with his own book in 1995 and this second edition expands and updates that popular text.

In Chapter 1 he present examples of observational studies and raises many important issues. Chapter 2 explains the principles of randomized controlled experiments. In Chapter 3 he covers overt bias and some of the basic methods to adjust for it. The sensitivity of observational studies to hidden biases is covered in Chapter 4.

This book is well written, authoritative and contains numerous references and examples. It also includes a chapter on how to plan an observational study.

Such studies are very important to epidemiologists who want to discover the cause of an epidemic or a disease. With large data base it is possible to remove or adjust biases by matching subjects using propensity scores. Rosenbaum effectively describes how propensity scorng and stratification can be used to make observational studies behave more like randomized control trials.

Premier book on this topic

From what I can tell, this is the premier book on observational studies, and Paul Rosenbaum is clearly an expert on the topic.

The book is written at essentially three levels: (a) qualitative discussions, (b) key statistical models and methods, and (c) more advanced and specialized topics, typically involving more advanced mathematics. Readers with a modest background in statistics (like me) will benefit from reading the book at the first level, but the second level will be tough going and the third level will be mostly out of reach. Therefore, I think the target audience for this book is mainly people with a strong background in statistics, which would include advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and professional statisticians.

Unlike experiments, observational studies try to discern the effects of treatments in situations where the assignment of treatments to subjects isn't controlled by the investigator. This situation is common in biomedicine and other areas, so this topic is very important. Lack of control in assigning treatments raises questions of overt and potential bias, and the aim of the book is largely to present statistical approaches to identify and analytically adjust for such biases so that plausible conclusions can be drawn regarding the likely effects of treatments. A key point here is that there's no single objectively "correct" statistical approach to use for this purpose, but rather it's a matter of developing statistical models, the validity of which is largely a matter of judgment. In this regard, Rosenbaum appropriately weaves in considerations from the philosophy of science throughout the book, so you'll hear names like Popper, Lakatos, Feyerabend, and Wittgenstein.

To the extent that I'm qualified to do so, I recommend this book to anyone with a serious interest in observational studies, and especially to people with a background in statistics strong enough to make full use of the book. Even with my limitations, I benefitted from this book and grasped the main ideas, and I look forward to returning to the book when I'm better prepared to tackle the math.

- Thermodynamics
- Solid state physics (With periodic table)
- Electromagnetism
- Optics
- Astrophysics
These are just formulas, there are no concepts descriptions or solved problems, yet is the most handy reference of college level math and physics for science, CS, math, phys majors

It might be an indication of superficiality to judge the book by its cover, but in this isolated case, the cover does truly indicate what lies ahead. In terms of aesthetic, it is really beautiful.
The book is true to its declared purpose in that it serves faithfully to provide esoteric formulas and equations of interest to physicists and applied mathematicians; that and that only. The intended audience is not the virgin tyros to whom the equations appear for the first time, but those seasoned virtuosos to whom the equations are as quotidian as a slice of bread in the morning but would rather commit the engravement to paper than to memory. In some cases knowledge of convention with regard to the uses of symbols is tacitly assumed, in most cases knowledge of proper contexts with regard to the applications of equations is likewise assumed.
I got the hardcover version of the book free upon joining a book club sometime three years ago, therefore I am not able to perform the cost-benefit analysis.

Saves me at least once a week

This book is one of the best, and I mean best, purchases I have ever made. It provides clear, consistent tables of physical values and equations, which can be a godsend in a land of inconsistent,confusing, and sometimes odd notation. Also useful is its Rosetta Stone-esque conversion table, which shows the values of myriad measures (including the US and UK values of the firkin, should one ever need to know,) into nice, clean SI units. The comprehensive index and well-organized sections make finding the proper equation easy as well.
This book has been useful in practically all of my physics coursework so far, and I anticipate it remaining a useful reference beyond my undergraduate years.

About the Author

Robert Gregory earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Minnesota where he absorbed a healthy respect for the value of empiricism in psychological testing. He taught at the University of Idaho for 23 years where he also developed a private practice in assessment. In his practice, he specialized in the evaluation of intellectual disability and cognitive impairment. His academic research centered on assessment topics such as subtle cognitive differences in left-handers, the impact of subclinical lead exposure on intelligence, the psychometric qualities of a wide variety of cognitive and personality tests, and meta-analysis. In one phase of his assessment career, he estimates evaluating more than 100 applicants for law enforcement positions. He has taught psychological assessment for 40 years. On 50 separate occasions, he has offered a course featuring one or another of the Wechsler scales (“Now do this one as quickly as you can, and be sure to tell me when you are finished”). He was professor of psychology at Wheaton College (Illinois) for seventeen years, including eight years as department chair, and five years as director of their doctoral program (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology. In his spare time he is an ambivalent jogger (motto: “Start slow and taper off”). He also does watercolors (motto: “Ability is over-rated”) which he stores in a secret compartment in his basement. He practices mindfulness-based meditation on a regular basis (seriously). He resides in the Seattle area and maintains an active interest in testing and clinical psychology. He is Professor Emeritus at Wheaton College (IL).

Well written but poorly edited

Overall, I think the concepts were presented in a straightforward and fairly readable way. Unfortunately, the editing leaves much to be desired! For such an incredibly complex subject, the very skimpy index is lamentably lacking, which made it difficult to navigate the book and locate crucial information. This made a rather difficult course even more difficult. I found myself frustrated on more than one occasion resorting to Google to locate necessary clarification. (At one point in the text the author bragged about the amount of money saved by turfing out the editing to an inexpensive publishing house in India; I don't believe the editing, however, was anything to crow about.)

Looking for where Peace can begin

I found the best way to approach this book was to let it fall open in a particular place, and then just read. Duhm is talking about how everything in the universe is all intimately woven together, and the contents of his book reflect this. You can open at random to just about any place in The Sacred Matrix, and find a stimulating, thought-provoking passage.

Several years ago, I visited Tamera (the "healing biotope" mentioned in the first review) and heard Duhm speak one warm Sunday morning. He was the first person I had ever heard that mentioned (all in the same speech): our galaxy; the subatomic level; the human responsibility to respect animal and plant life; problems between men and women, including the need for trust and a new approach to sexuality; the sources of human fear; community as a laboratory to discover new ways of being; and a concrete vision for a future without war. I was very impressed, and his book (which was only available in German at that time) is an expansion of all these important themes, and how they are interconnected.

Amoung the many other thinkers and visionaries who Duhm quotes in The Sacred Matrix: Barry Long, Wilhelm Reich, Sabine Lichtenfels, Carlissa Estes, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

Problems with the book? It is, at times, too... "dense" is the word that comes to mind. The book can be a difficult read straight through from cover to cover. That is why I fell back to a more random approach, which I found suited the material quite well.

What I like most about this book is that it represents a lifetime of thinking, exploring, and experimenting by a very profound man. Deiter Duhm has dedicated his life to developing a theory and practice that can unite peace-workers around the world. The Sacred Matrix is a deeply thought-out statement of what has gone wrong in the world, and a heart-felt invitation to transform our life together.

Building a new future now: a report on an experiment and manual

We all have a longing for a better world. Some of us even dare to think that such a world is actually possible, and that a world of peace, love, cooperation and abundance for all is necessary to our survival. Dieter Duhm and his friends set out to demonstrate in practical terms that this profound yearning of humanity can be satisfied. They have dedicated the last 30 years to this endeavor.

This book is a manual on how to build a new culture, a culture that supports the Sacred Matrix, the Matrix of Life, and is supported by it. Dieter Duhm draws on a fairly new physics theory, the Holographic Universe, to empower us all, to put the responsibility for the building of this new culture on each of us. A deep shift in our beliefs and behavior towards the Matrix of Life, (of Love), will eventually tilt the balance on this blue planet back towards the paradise it was supposed to be.

The building blocks of this new culture are: peace between the genders (peace in sex and love relationships is the starting point); restoring woman to her rightful, loving, sexual and powerful role; formation of communities of people to support the change process; cooperation between people and nature, between people and the earth; creation of a radically new mythology, a new spirituality, new ethics to support this new culture. This new culture is not a Utopian fantasy, it is worked and researched on in Tamera, in the south of Portugal.

This book should be read by anyone seriously committed to the peace movement, to ending the cycle of war, fear and hatred. It should be read by all women who want to wake up from the nightmare of hatred and dissatisfaction that has plagued their lives (for thousands of years). It should be read by all man that want to love women without fear. It should be read by young people dreaming of a better world, critical of the world they have inherited and ready to go to work for their dream. It should be read by all people that have given up on religions as the answer because it draws on the true spiritual nature of things. It should be read by anyone interested in communities, in ecology, in cohousing and ecovillages, in sustainable and decentralized energy production, in permaculture and in low cost architecture.

The Sacred Matrix is a book full of hope, faith, love, science, pragmatism, technology and adventure.

A book worth reading for a future worth living

"The Sacred Matrix" by Dr. Dieter Duhm is a "must read" for anyone wanting a life of peace for themselves, their children, or their children's children.

I have known Dr. Duhm for fifteen years, and I have the greatest respect and admiration for him and his efforts to create a new culture of peace on this planet. For more than thirty years he has worked tirelessly and with a steady focus to find a way for human beings to live in cooperation and harmony with each other, with animals, and with nature. His persistence and dedication are now paying off with the success of an intentional community in southern Portugal called "Tamera."

In "The Sacred Matrix", Dr. Duhm calls Tamera a "healing biotope" - a word most English-speaking people have never heard and may not understand. Literally translated, "biotope" simply means a place where life lives. Duhm, however, gives it several different twists, calling it a "greenhouse of trust," "an acupuncture point of peace," and "a self-sufficient future community."

Essentially, "The Sacred Matrix" is the definitive summation of Dr. Duhm's vision and a detailed explanation of his philosophy that forms the basis of life in a "healing biotope." Sophisticated and thought-provoking, Duhm's arguments include the necessity for community and an end to patriarchy if the world is going to survive.

As far as I am concerned, if Dr. Duhm had only uttered one sentence in his entire life, he would still qualify as one of the great thinkers of our time. That sentence: "We will never have peace between nations as long as there is war between man and woman." There are many good men today preaching world peace - men with good hearts and good intentions, I'm sure - but who have never found a way to have a meaningful, lasting, and truly intimate relationship with a woman. Something's wrong with that picture.

Dr. Duhm, however, doesn't shy away from what he calls the "prime issues" that hold the key to a future of peace: love and sexuality. "There is an entelechial form of sexuality and sexual love, and of partnership and free love... and we must find this form in order to achieve healing. It is the form of the Sacred Matrix," he says.

Dieter Duhm, Tamera, and "The Sacred Matrix" definitely take a different approach to life and living than the rest of the world. Nature loves diversity, and evolution requires it. It just might be that Tamera, and other healing biotopes like it to come, are the best hope for the future of the human race. That alone makes this book worth reading.
