ROBERT GARLAND is the Roy D. and Margaret B. Wooster Professor of Classics at Colgate University. He is the author of a number of books on the ancient world, including The Greek Way of Death (1985), The Piralus (1988), The Greek Way of Life (1990), Religion and the Greeks (1994), and The Eye of the Beholder: Deformity and Disability in the Graeco-Roman World (1995).

A superb overview of Greek culture

Garland does an outstanding job of presenting a readable, easily understandable overview of daily life and culture among the ancient Greeks. His book destroys a number of myths about ancient Greece, and avoids the trap of becoming too closely engaged with the subject. He remains objective throughout, presenting neither positive nor negative spin on Greek lifestyle, and avoiding political bias. Garland clearly has no axe to grind. Furthermore, he presents the material in a way that modern readers can understand; he places the subject matter in the context of the times, but does not assume detailed knowledge of Greek culture or history by the reader. His writing is a bit dry at times, but that's unavoidable when presenting detailed descriptions of lifestyle and culture.

I do wish the publisher would release another print run at a more reasonable price. $55 is unreasonable for any book. I suggest buying it used.

In spite of the high price, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the way the ancient Greeks thought and acted. It has definitely improved my understanding of Greek history.

Great work but opinions needed to be left out.

I love this book, the detail was great and he was honest about how they lived instead of the romanticized view we have of them. It showed the pitfalls of their society, for instance their view toward women. My problem with this book was the author's opinion toward the Gods. He would often mention the Gods spheres of influence and then say how they didn't live up to the ideal. One example that comes to mind is the mention of Zeus as the God of justice and then immediately after says "though he was far from consistent in his pursuit of that aim. Moreover, his own behavior fell lamentably short of setting a standard of morality for human beings." (pg. 135) My problem with these statements is the author fails to differentiate between the Gods of the myth, the stories told to entertain and the Theoi (Gods) of the religious cults who had a very different personality. I also thought an inclusion of Plato and his views of the Gods and the myths would have been helpful. Overall though the book was a great read with the right amount of information.

A must have!

As a beginning copywriter, John Caples wrote what is probably the most famous ad of all time, "They Laughed When I Sat Down at the Piano..." With 31 years' experience and the same skill and imagination, he is also the author of this practical text on the question of central interest to all copywriters--What makes one ad pay, while another fails?

Caples analyzes the hundreds of successful ads quoted in this book, and the many side-by-side comparisons between two similar but not equally successful ads. In analyzing these examples, he isolates the essential appeal of the ad that made it a success. These analyses yield principles, procedures, tips and practical suggestions--each tested with 31 years' experience--that you can immediately apply to any copy assignment in any media and style.

All copywriters, from cub to chief, should find a spot within easy reach for this useful, practical text. For anyone who works with copywriters, or wants to know more about advertising, this is the best book around for describing clearly and factually what the copywriter is trying to do, what his problems are, and how he goes about solving them.

Classic Copywriting Guide

John Caples was a pioneer of direct-response copywriting. In Chapter 8 he presents as series of paired ads which were tested, followed by analysis of why the winning ads outperformed. The winner often outperformed the other by a wide margin -- up to five times as many responses.

Caples emphasizes the importance of headlines throughout the book. "If the headline doesn't induce reading, it doesn't matter what the copy says. Because copy that isn't read, can't sell." He suggests starting the body copy by continuing the thought from the headline. "You will never lose a reader in the first paragraph by amplifying the idea which stopped him in the first place."

The author cautions that clever ads tend to underperform because they lose clarity. He observed that "so-called clever ads are sometimes published for products where it is impossible to check sales results from ads."

Caples retired as Creative Director of BBDO in 1982 after 56 years in the advertising business. The world has changed a lot since he wrote this book in 1957. While his ad copy is dated, his focus on copy testing and conversion is as relevant as ever. "Styles may change in advertising, but not the basic principles."

An incredible book that's still relevant

John Caples explains how he came to write his famous ad, "When I sat down at the piano . . ." and many other great little tidbits. He shares how to write effective headlines (make sure they build curiosity and offer a reward.) While I'm a seasoned copywriter and writer, I never tire of reading the masters. And Caples is certainly a member of that honored group.

This book is truly a gem. He discusses ads that worked and those that didn't. He discusses his own mistakes. Not many people would dare to do that. You almost feel you get to know the real John Caples in this book. It's a very honest book.

If you're a copywriter, you need to read it. If you don't, you're missing one of the greatest reads and some of the best lessons you could have. For the price of this book, you'll get a real education.

About the Author

Leslie Braksick is a much-sought executive coach, strategy execution consultant, and behavioral expert. The author has covered an area that most books just skip over.....maybe because it is hard work. So much of what we deal with on a daily basis with our clients, internally or at home has to do with behaviors this book really takes you through the process of clearly understanding the role of behaviors on others as well as the bottom line results of the organization.

A sweeping romance centered around a timeless wedding dress

I was blown away by this beautiful, awe-inspiring tale of one dress that spans--and impacts--the lives of four special women. The Wedding Dress revolves around Charlotte Malone and her discovery of the dress within an old, beaten trunk...and the path down memory lane that it took her on.

While Charlotte was the main character this story revolved around, there were a lot of other central characters as well. And while one might think that this would get confusing, Rachel Hauck did an outstanding job in making each person unique and stand out to the reader. I just loved the funny quirks some of them had! Especially the "Man in Purple" character. Put me in mind of all those sayings about 'angels in our midst'. I can't say who my favorite character was, or who I bonded with the most--the entire cast was so memorable!

I've never read anything by Hauck before, so wasn't sure what to expect from the author when beginning The Wedding Dress. But she won me over almost instantly! The way she transports her readers between historical and contemporary times was really neat, unique, and well done.

The writing style was sharp and vivid, grabbing my attention from the first page. There were several passionate kisses between characters, but Hauck keeps the details down, making The Wedding Dress a book to be recommended for both older and younger readers--anyone who is a true romantic at heart will be heaving sighs and wiping tears by the end. I highly recommend!

A year ago, I crossed something off my bucket list.

I attended a writing workshop in Tulsa, Okla., led by Rachel Hauck.

It was a cool day, because I met a couple of neat writers, got some ideas (I'm really a non-fiction writer who dreams of writing a novel) and met Hauck.

Basically, I got to sit at her feet (OK, it was at a table in a church's meeting room), and listen to her talk writing and how she got lots of her ideas.

She also talked about writing a book a book about a wedding dress that fits four women - kind of a "traveling pants" meets romance and bridal wear.

Kind of a cool concept. (Although, I'm still waiting for the vampire Amish tale the workshop participants kept joking about.)

Well, fast forward - a year later, I had the opportunity to review The Wedding Dress - the book Hauck talked about in the workshop.

A book about four women - who all fit inside the dress WITHOUT alteration.

Spanning multiple generations, Hauck crafts a tale that unites a group of women - three still living - showing their common interests, ties and faith. She also weaves in a hint of mystery and intrigue (and a really interesting character wearing purple!).

It's a fun book. In the beginning the dialogue jumps back and forth between Charlotte and the original owner. We see similarities to their struggles for love and acceptance. As it continues, we meet the other two owners and see how they are all linked together by the dress and more.

Like other books I've read written by Hauck, the novel's characters are enjoyable and the plot captures your attention.

On the scale of one to five, I give this book a four.Fun and humorous, The Wedding Dress would make a great "tuck in your bag" on a vacation or "rainy day" read.

Four Great Stories in One

It seems like I'm practically gushing about each of the books I reviewed lately and this is no exception. Rachel Hauck's newest book tells the story of a wedding dress that is almost magical, finding its own way to brides that need it. The Wedding Dress 'takes the stories of each of the four women who have worn this magical dress and weaves them together in to an intriguing novel. As the stories of the dress and its wearers evolved I found myself more engaged in the story with each turn of the page. Hauck blends historical fiction, modern fiction and a bit of suspense into a story told so beautifully I didn't want the book to end. It's one of those stories that you wish was really true, a story so compelling that you long to be a part of it.

This is the first book I've read by Rachel Hauck and if her others are anything like this one, I think I'll be adding more of her books to my library.

Not the best

It's not the best book on hospitality that I read. Though the topic of the book is very interesting, the book is kind of dry. In several chapters it gives basic information about hospitality industry. It contains typos. For example, FGI Friday's was hilarious :)

Saviano's landmark expos� of the demoralizing effects of organized crime in his homebase of Naples, Italy, is an incredible tale that loses its power in this long-winded reading by veteran Kramer. Droning on in a matter-of-fact tone, Kramer loses the author's personal approach and fails to bring life to the touching memoir. Uninspired and indifferent, Kramer often sounds tired, struggling to keep himself interested, much less the listener. With slurred, often muffled narration, Kramer makes no attempt to engage his audience, a shame considering the rather fervent account that Saviano manages to recreate given his relationship with a deadly organized crime outfit and extensive research into the topic. Listening to Kramer over nine discs becomes a monotonous task rather than the entrancing experience that it should be. An utterly disappointing reading that fails to capture the gusto of Saviano's work. Simultaneous release with the FSG hardcover (Reviews, Aug. 13).

International Organized Crime in and out of Italy today

This book is an extremely engrossing read about the real world of high stakes organized crime operating in and out of Italy today. It will have tremendous appeal to real life crime fighters and mob aficionados across the world, not to mention anyone with generational ties to Italy as a homeland. Well written and extremely informative, it engages the reader in a tell-all approach of the extensive world wide implications of organized crime originating in and out of Naples today. Graphic and disturbing, it gives factual details only an `insider' would have access to. Particularly fascinating is the increasingly large part women play in the leading role of organized family clans. `The Godmother', if you will. One could only imagine a blockbuster film coming out of this information. This reader would have preferred more details about how the writer actually infiltrated `The System' but perhaps that will be a follow up to this amazing read.

Gomorrah is not a compilation of news clippings on the subject of the Mafia or better the Camorra.
It's the result of years of heroic work by a young writer that has devoted himself to the understanding of the criminal world that developed in the area around Naples .
The scope and range of the illegal activities are world wide and control the world of fashion, construction, drugs, food, toxic waste, and almost any form of commercial endeavor. The message is a portent of things to come where the claws have not reached yet. The courage of the writer has put him in life danger for the rest of his life and and under constant police protection. The valor of his pen is as great as the beauty of his prose. I can not recall any book that has moved me so deeply in a long time. The story is not only a requiem for the Italian nation but also
a heads up for the rest of the world where the connections with the Italian Camorra are blossoming: that is China, Australia, Central and South America, Africa and obviously the US.

Behold here an unfashionable and stirring book. The pages drip with the residue of disfiguring communications left by hitmen on the lifeless bodies of their victims. I do not go in for glamorized violence and I do not watch movies with guns. Still, I turned pages of this grisly book because its message is both fascinating and urgent. The scores of deaths described are countable but only a partial number. What waste. The mafia clans of Campania, whose fractions divide business by terror, account for the fear they inspire with their omnipresent success. It is bizarre to read of this smothering and ultimately corrupting system that renovates, enriches and destroys as it spreads.

A marginal insider, Savinio here unloads the weight of his learning and the roar of his disillusionment. His book puts to pasture the works that would try to rival it as discourses or discoveries on the nature of power in society. Fans of Foucault have no idea what power is about until they have read this book. The same goes for the armchair aficionado of corporate monopoly. Much of the information Savinio relates he has gathered as an inhabitant or curious, casual employee of the clans that run Italy from the graced and volatile realm of Campania.

The first chapter on the port of Naples is likely to unsettle anyone who lives near a port of entry by sea, as it shows how illegal goods make it from sea to secrecy and to the market. The chapter called "Cement" demonstrates the relationship between contractors, bids, bias and regional economy. These two chapters alone seem to be stunning achievements. The final chapter treats the horrifying management and crippling dispersion of toxins through land, sea and air for the sake of immediate profit. There are chapters that address the subjects of women, religion, fashion, film and clan supremacy.

Saviano sheds light not on numbers and accounts but on names and traces. In the face of such an overwhelming and entrenched corruption the only power a writer or citizen can exercise in behalf of the common good is to name the names. Those who speak the truth run mortal risk but only the brave who take up that risk protect the multitude from fear, abuse, and destruction. I commend the inspiring bravery of this author and the skill with which he unwinds the horrors of our twisted realm.

Outside the house by the lake the heavy rain seemed to hold down the darkness, grudging the slow fade from black, to blue, to gray. As I prepared that last breakfast at home, squeezing the oranges, boiling the eggs, smelling the toast and coffee, I looked out the kitchen window at the dim Quebec woods gradually coming into focus. Near the end of a wet summer, the spruce, birch, poplars, and cedars were densely green, glossy and dripping.

For this momentous departure I had hoped for a better omen than this cold, dark, rainy morning, but it did have a certain pathetic fallacy, a sympathy with my interior weather. In any case, the weather didn’t matter; I was going. I still didn’t know where (Alaska? Mexico? Patagonia?), or for how long (two months? four months? a year?), but I knew I had to go. My life depended on it.

Sipping the last cup of coffee, I wrestled into my leathers, pulled on my boots, then rinsed the cup in the sink and picked up the red helmet. I pushed it down over the thin balaclava, tightened the plastic rainsuit around my neck, and pulled on my thick waterproof gloves. I knew this was going to be a cold, wet ride, and if my brain wasn’t ready for it, at least my body would be prepared. That much I could manage.

The house on the lake had been my sanctuary, the only place I still loved, the only thing I had left, and I was tearing myself away from it unwillingly, but desperately. I didn’t expect to be back for a while, and one dark corner of my mind feared that I might never get back home again. This would be a perilous journey, and it might end badly. By this point in my life I knew that bad things could happen, even to me.

I had no definite plans, just a vague notion to head north along the Ottawa River, then turn west, maybe across Canada to Vancouver to visit my brother Danny and his family. Or, I might head northwest through the Yukon and Northwest Territories to Alaska, where I had never travelled, then catch the ferry down the coast of British Columbia toward Vancouver. Knowing that ferry would be booked up long in advance, it was the one reservation I had dared to make, and as I prepared to set out on that dark, rainy morning of August 20th, 1998, I had two and a half weeks to get to Haines, Alaska — all the while knowing that it didn’t really matter, to me or anyone else, if I kept that reservation.

Out in the driveway, the red motorcycle sat on its centerstand, beaded with raindrops and gleaming from my careful preparation. The motor was warming on fast idle, a plume of white vapor jetting out behind, its steady hum muffled by my earplugs and helmet.

I locked the door without looking back. Standing by the bike, I checked the load one more time, adjusting the rain covers and shock cords. The proverbial deep breath gave me the illusion of commitment, to the day and to the journey, and I put my left boot onto the footpeg, swung my right leg high over the heavily laden bike, and settled into the familiar saddle.

My well–travelled BMW R1100GS (the “adventure–touring” model) was packed with everything I might need for a trip of unknown duration, to unknown destinations. Two hard–shell luggage cases flanked the rear wheel, while behind the saddle I had stacked a duffel bag, tent, sleeping bag, inflatable foam pad, groundsheet, tool kit, and a small red plastic gas can. I wanted to be prepared for anything, anywhere.

Because I sometimes liked to travel faster than the posted speed limits, especially on the wide open roads of the west — where it was safe in terms of visible risks, but dangerous in terms of hidden enforcement — I had decided to try using a small radar detector, which I tucked into my jacket pocket, with its earpiece inside the helmet.

A few other necessities, additional tools, and my little beltpack filled the tankbag in front of me, and a roadmap faced up from a clear plastic cover on top. The rest of the baggage I would carry away with me that morning had less bulk, but more weight — the invisible burdens that had driven me to depart into what already seemed like a kind of exile.

For Those About to Grieve

I read Ghost Rider two years ago as I was a fan of Rush and Neil Peart. As I write this review I am not sure why I read it the first time. It's a journey about grief and at the time my world was perfect. While I read the book I marveled at how Neil survived and made it from one day to the next. A few months ago my 45 year old wife died suddenly. We had been married for 26 years and have 4 sons. She was my wife, mother of my children and best friend. I received numerous books from family and friends regarding grief. I read parts of those books and they all told me the same thing and each one confirmed what I was feeling. While flipping through my kindle I found Ghost Rider. I read Ghost Rider again and it's impact was meaningful to someone who was grieving. While it is impossible to compare yourgrief to someone else's grief Neil talked about many of things I felt and was thinking about. Neil's journey brought me a measure of comfort and the thought that I might be ok. The book was so inspirational that I bought a BMW F800GS and I am planning a trip up the Dawson Hwy!

this great lyricist is a great writer

I'm torn on this one.

As a fan might expect, this great lyricist is a great writer. And you really feel his pain as you read about the death of his wife and daughter.

But he's also a rather arrogant soul and that comes through loud and clear, making the books and it's author less amiable. Plus half the book is a reprinting of letters he wrote to his drug dealing friend in prison.

I'm glad I read it. As an avid motorcyclist, I loved reading about his journey.

Yes, I am an abashed RUSH fan, however not to denigrate Alex and Getty, I have Neil Peart drumsticks.

It helps that I've read the other books from Neil Peart and find his travels fascinating, pleasant to read and allows me to feel his journey as if it were my own. Reading The Healing Road, then moving to Far & Away and finishing up with Far & Near, it is like; even if only a little bit, like sitting on his shoulder as Neil travels the road of life and sometimes death. I am well aware of Neil's aversion to worship, however sometimes it is the impetus to do things subconsciously that we really wanted to do anyway, however we just don't have the push. The Healing Road led me to buy my first "real" motorcycle at 52 years of age (no, it was not midlife crisis) The travels in all three books gives me the urge to just ride and enjoy the moments we see and the people along the way. There is good writing and pictures that give life to the story. There is also the unwritten parts that explain how the "Working Guy's" get along so well while living such different lives off the stage and out of the rehearsal halls. Now, if I could just figure out the meaning to the words in "The Tree's".

About the Author
M. Elen Deming, DDes, ASLA, RLA, is Professor and Head of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois. She is past editor of the award-winning Landscape Journal, as well as current President and Fellow of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture. She currently serves as on the editorial advisory boards for the European Journal of Landscape Architecture and Landscape Journal.

Simon R. Swaffield, PhD, FNZILA, is Professor of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University in Canterbury, New Zealand. In 2007, he received the Outstanding Research and Communication Award from CELA. He is founding editor of Landscape Review and frequently authors and edits journal articles.

Landscape Architecture Research: Inquiry, Strategy, Design

If anyone in landscape architecture, environmental design, and related fields is anticipating a plan "A" thesis or pursuing a PhD, this book is the best place to start and is a "must read" for all academic landscape architects around the globe, especially for academics attempting to compete in the research world with a masters degree and illustrates through example and presenting the vast arena of knowledge building, how the Ph.D. is becoming the necessary standard to conduct rigorous knowledge building with in the profession. This book has been needed by scholarly investigators in these subject areas for over 30 years. Before the publication of this book, one of the best discussions on the subject was a "Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture" annual meeting proceedings from 1980 by the University of Wisconsin addressing landscape research or general books such as Paul D. Leedy's "Practical Research." For landscape architectural researchers, it has been difficult to find publications addressing research methods that span the profession, because the profession addresses the built environment as architects and engineers do, the natural environment found in natural science investigations, human behavior in the social sciences, and additional studies related to cultural geography, history, and fine arts. In 256 pages, this book covers numerous topics and contains a lot of thoughtful advice. Each page is filled with nuances, approaches, and ideas that should not be taken lightly and each page often embraces ideas found in a whole college lecture expanding upon theory, methods, and research seminar dialogues. The book starts with the basics about building and creating knowledge, then describes the various strategies and approaches to build knowledge, and finishes by relating knowledge to professional practice. The book also provides many case studies to illustrate key ideas and for the reader to explore further. The book is also international in perspective, drawing from case studies by investigators around the world, including a case study by myself and my colleagues found on page 144. I do know both of the authors of the book and admire their professionalism, dedication, and productivity. So I probably have a personal bias in favor of this publication. After carefully examining the publication, I hope that you will also have a favorable opinion and find the book as useful as I have found it. I personally own over 5,000 textbooks and this specific book has quickly risen to one of my favorites and most meaningful. I am sure that it will become featured in-depth required reading by the planning, design, and construction graduate students at my university in the research methods, design theory, and research seminar courses. The book provides a great foundation so that when students enroll in the regression modeling, multivariate analysis, non-parametric statistics, or spatial autocorrelation classes, they have a perspective concerning where and how the statistics course fit into landscape architectural knowledge building.

Excellent book

I've used this book as a text in my graduate landscape architecture course for two years and consider it to be the very best book ever written on landscape architecture research. My students find it very valuable in framing their research questions and identifying appropriate ways to investigate them. The chapters cover each of the topics and issues related to research in landscape architecture in an even-handed and easily-understood way. The authors don't shy away from contentious issues and provide very appropriate and precisely correct interpretations. I recommend this book to you without reservation.
